    Who else is...

I upped the pack weight to 50 lbs. (including the rifle/scabbard, and rucked it 3.4 miles. I'll do a repeat today and tomorrow before heading west on Tuesday. It looks like I've done about all I can short of finding a 10,000' mountain in Minnesota..

I added the scabbard and rifle to the pack, which upped the weight by 7#. #44 right now, and hoofed the 2.2 mile course without breaking wind or much of a sweat. My pack won't get much heavier until I have to pack a critter out. Less than a week before heading west. I will try to add some...

    Mandatory CWD testing

I contacted CO P&W and spoke to someone at the Steamboat Springs office. I was told that just submitting the lymph nodes was acceptable. To access the video on the removal process, type in CWD in the search box, then the top line is "Everything Videos" Click on Videos. Pretty...

How many rounds of ammo to take?

My upcoming elk hunt partners were reluctant to do much shooting because they have been unable to replace their ammo. You can find 30-06 ammo now, as long as you are willing to pay the price. One of the guys would likely tuck more dollars in a G-string during the road trip if we let him make...

    Who else is...

My pack training is going well. I haven't upped the weight or distance much yet, but have substantially reduced the time it takes to cover the distance. Legs, lungs, and heart appear to still be working within design perimeters. There's way too much to do before leaving for Colorado next week.

    Mandatory CWD testing

Thanks for the input guys. I had already planned on stripping down the head, but the lymph node call suggestion will be followed up on.

    Mandatory CWD testing

I just received a gift in the mail from Colorado Parks & Wildlife. My area was "selected" for a mandatory CWD test of any elk taken on our upcoming hunt. It is good to know what is happening in regards to CWD, but it will likely be a huge PIA to follow what is requited. First of all, the...

How many rounds of ammo to take?

i was on a guided horseback hunting trip in 2010 with a trap shooting buddy of mine. I told him to pack in a couple boxes since we would be traveling in some rough country and would be unable to return to my truck if he or the horse falls and knocks the scope off zero. When we were unpacking...

    Who else is...

I was finally able to start my pack training in prep for the CO elk hunt. I loaded the new Eberlestock Mainframe, batwings, and attached duffle to total 37 lbs. Hoofed it 2.2 miles using the hiking poles, and was surprised at how much my legs felt it. The second day was better, and plan to...

    Sighting in your rifle

The "wobble" that you se at a higher magnification was always there, you just don't notice it much at a lower magnification.

    Sighting in your rifle

A quality scope should be consistant at all settings, but a BDC style generally has to be at the highest setting. I just sighted in my Tikka T3 after some modifications, and with a Shepard scope it has gradients to 1,000 yards. My older eyes don't focus like they used to, and the higher...

If your GF helped pack that big boy out, she is definitely a keeper.

    Dolores County Colorado Hunting Accident

If you follow the links and read the report, it is clear that the basic rule of identifying your target and what is beyond was not followed. No excuse. I wouldn't be suprised if the investigation shows that there weren't even any elk involved, and that the archery and muzzy hunters were...

    Time For Spring Hunts Applications

I know all about the baby-sitting part. The 2 guys that I am elk hunting with this year in CO started getting points for an anticipated MZL hunt that took 5-7 points to draw. One or the other "forgot", even after reminders, and it took 12 years to build up 9 pts. each. After all that, they...

NASCAR Race at the LA Coliseum

My favorite horse story involves the LA Coliseum. I was in the Marine Corps mounted color guard out of 29 Palms, and we rode horses in parades and events all around So. California in 1973. This was for the North/South college football game, and there were 100,000 in the stands, and it was...

    Dolores County Colorado Hunting Accident

On guided hunts in Wyoming (and likely other states), the hunter is wearing blaze orange, but the guide, packers, and film crew are not. Seems dumb to me, as all are in the same environment and the only guy with a gun already knows where he is. That said, no excuse if the shooter "thought it...

    Who else is...

I spent another day cutting trees and brush, then hauling same to the burn pit. I found 3 nice 4' white pines that I transplanted to the area that I cleared that was previously occupied by a dozen budworm killed balsams. My point next to the lake will be absolutely stunning in another 30-40...

    New crossbow

I've shot the bow and adjusted the scope. I can't say that I have bonded with it yet, but at 20 yards, I can't shoot at the same bullseye without risking hitting another arrow. There is definitely a learning curve, but it doesn't appear that it will take as much to learn as when I first bought...
