OHV Trails - Colorado National Forest Land

Get the official USFS/MVUM for the area (or the layer in your mapping tool). Gates are clearly marked and where you see those you know that 2-track you're looking at is only for fire, USFS, logging, and similar. You won't have any trouble in hunting season. Where not forbidden (many wilderness...

    Favorite Piece Of Gear???

I'd have a different answer every month. Screwing around with gear is half of what I love about hunting! I guess this month it's my Vortex Diamondbacks, mostly because of their story. I found a busted pair out in the back-country, nearly destroyed, and contacted Vortex mostly to share the story...

    Bear bins

Do any of you have any contacts or thoughts on some way to organize contributions around bear bins? I think we can all agree bears getting habituated to human trash is bad for everyone - the bear, the camper, and the hunter. But recently I've had a couple of experiences and chats with folks at...

OHV Trails - Colorado National Forest Land

I'm not sure where exactly you're looking, and won't ask. But bear in mind that there are lots of uses of the forest beyond hunting and camping that are "legitimate" and also lead to tons of two-track scars everywhere you look. Two big ones are logging and fire mitigation. Those scars last for...

CO 1st rifle elk vs. muzzy elk

I hunted 1st rifle last year for the first time and can second the comment about it being crazy busy. The place where we "camped" had folks lined up in tents on the verge along the side of the road all the way out of the parking area. There must have been 50 people camped that way. I talked to...

    Don't pet the moose lady...

I'm glad the moose DIDN'T stomp her. Policy is they put the animal down when that happens, and it'd be a waste of a beautiful animal (the moose).

Weather conditions as it relates to the calendar, elevation and state?

Three years ago, Colorado was so dry that I did a quick camping trip at 9500' on Jan 2. I remember we joked that it was both the last and first trips of the season because of the date. Three days later a blizzard hit where we had been and dropped a foot of snow. Last year Elk Rifle 1 (Oct...

    New Puffy

As usual, me being the voice of the "cheap answer"... One inexpensive option I picked up last year that I'm happy with was a ZShow packable down jacket from Amazon for $50 or so. It's average quality, average amount of down... but low price for all that. It's only 10oz but works amazingly well...

Please critique my caribou gear list

Big fan of gallon ziplocs here as well. I use them on literally every trip. Wet socks you don't want getting everything else wet? Ziploc. Backup pair of socks you want to make sure DON'T get wet? Ziploc. Cool fern your daughter insists we take home? Ziploc. Piece of backstrap to set aside for...

    2021 W

Have y'all found GoHunt to be all that useful for this research? I feel like I've looked at it two or three times and always wandered off without committing to it. At least for Colorado it felt like largely a repeat of stats I saw elsewhere. Curious if I was missing something.

    2021 W

Well... you did post a question at 8:25pm and then a sarcastic follow up about not getting an answer at 6:13am the next day.... Nobody used the term a**hole but you. But getting cranky with people who owe you nothing just because nobody replies fast enough with the info you want is definitely...

    New regs are available

The 2020 Big Game PDF is up if you want to download it: https://cpw.state.co.us/aboutus/Pages/RegulationsBrochures.aspx I knew about the season date structure changes coming, but I hadn't heard they were ditching the Leftover Draw and doing a straight up Secondary Draw that anybody can enter...

    My "Western Rifle" Weight

Yeah I agree. I'm a pounds and ounces freak in my gear but not in my gun. My X-Bolt Long Range Stalker in 30-06 tops 9.1lbs with scope, neoprene scope cover, and bipod. I could trim a few ounces somewhere but I like the things that weigh those ounces. Maybe I'm rationalizing. But I figure...

    Shoot or Pass?

That's true if you say "meat" in a single word. But if you want your meat to have a decent, natural life, be free of hormones and who knows what else, and provide an activity and achievement for yourself all in one, to me it's still a great option. I'm a DIY guy. I just like "putting meat in the...

    Sleeping cot

I have a couple of these: They're OK. Not the lightest, but very strong. They're utilitarian: even if you like a very firm mattress you may still want SOMETHING under you, even if just for insulation. The kids are fine on them with sleeping bags but I like a sleeping pad under me as well.

Pack weight? Who weighs theirs and how much?

Geeking out on pack weights gives us something to do when we can't be out actually hunting. :p

Where U going to hunt this year???

    1. Colorado deer and elk, archery 2. Colorado elk rifle 1 3. Colorado deer rifle 2 4. Colorado dusky grouse 5. Colorado pheasant 6. Colorado fishing 7. File for preference point for pronghorn (not in the mood this year) and bear (building points for a specific zone). I'm a lucky son of a gun to...

    Mule Deer Assistance

Goals matter a LOT, too. I'm a meat hunter -- I don't care about antlers on the wall. I make knife handles out of those. What I want every year is meat in the freezer, so my goals may be totally different from yours. But I feel like we all know the "critical rules," right? 1. Get out there. The...

    20194th season

I hunted it last year (2018) and it was tricky. There are some good animals there but there's a lot of competition. It's a popular area both with locals and folks traveling in. And a year ago, unit 27 nearby had a big fire that's starting to show some wildflowers now but is still pushing a lot...

    Wolves in Colorado

They'll just say "that's great but it's not a sustainable population" and introduce more anyway. I think they're pretty much already doing that.
