    Colorado Left Over Tag List

To be honest, Graybird, I found that whole process super confusing to follow. I've read the 2020-2024 plan a few times now and am still not sure whether it was an improvement or not! :D

    Colorado Left Over Tag List

There's a "Landowner Preference Program" has kind of a back-channel setup. Landowners get "vouchers" ahead of time that are like pre-issued tags that they can give out to hunters. You need 160 acres or more to qualify, and you get one voucher for every 160 acres you include in your registration...

    Colorado Left Over Tag List

The Web site seemed a little better than last year, where it got crushed and was a total mystery whether you should refresh or not. The Queue It service obviously helped a bit. It took me 23 minutes to get through, but I was able to get my tag. I chose one that there's a lot of leftover on...

    Colorado Left Over Tag List

Looks like they have a queue system in place now. I don't know what it's doing because I assume everybody is still getting in, but at least the site is still up. :)

CO OTC 2nd rifle season by Meeker

Depends on the weather. Not being snarky. If you can't go scout it before the season, just try to be flexible, get as far back in there as you can, and head up or downhill if the snows come early or late.

    California's new Ammunition Law

Well, neither of us has to live there, so there's that. But I was born there, have family there, and still go there once or twice a year so I know the culture and it's just not their #1 priority. And that's fine. It's the whole point of states rights, if this is what they want, they can have it...

    space between camps

I don't love people and prefer to be on my own most times. But in hunting season there's something to be said for sharing a clearing. Your fire, smells, noise, bustle, and so on are going to keep elk and deer away for some radius around you. Better one radius than two, to my mind.

    Colorado Left Over Tag List

Looks like a tight list this year, tighter than I remember last year being. I was hoping to pick up a 4th season deer tag as an excuse to get out of the house with a friend, but there are slim pickings. To be honest I'm super tired of dealing with the "mad rush" the morning the sale starts...

    Spiking/Truck Camping/Coyoting - in unit

Since we're reviving an old thread... This year I'll be elk hunting with a group of 3 other guys. We're jointly packing in an 8-man tipi and stove (only going 2 miles in so we don't mind making 2 trips). These guys are younger and more energetic than me which means two things. First, we'll...

    Best hunting boots????

I've tried (and loved/hated) almost every style and brand of boot over the years, and I'm down to just two that I'm sticking with, each for a different purpose: 1. For most hiking, scouting, or hunting I wear Salomon trail runners. Super lightweight, great grip, and I'm not tired at the end of...

    Great lighting option

I use these a lot on backpacking trips. I back them up with a Nite-Ize Moonlit Micro Lantern. Those things have a good enough glow to fill a tent and they last forever (they say 60 hours, I've never found out) on a pair of CR2032 batteries. It only adds 0.5oz to my load which is awesome, and I...

How Do You Define A Successful Scouting Trip?

This. Scouting isn't just about actually seeing animals. If you scout on a hot summer day for a late-season deer hunt they may just not be where you are... yet. Half my scouting trips are about making sure I have access, parking, good places to camp, good hiking routes to features where I want...

.380 Trail Protection / Bear Load?

I own a Glock 20 (10mm auto) and a Ruger Super Redhawk (44 Remington Magnum). I carry bear spray. Unless you're in grizzly country it's just numbers. Bear spray definitely works, the others may work. But bear spray (UDAP standard canister) weighs 15oz while my pistol options weight 2.5+lbs. And...

    Trekking Poles

I knocked 2oz out of my hiking poles by removing the wrist straps. I don't think it's that big of a deal - I don't really notice the weight difference. It was just to get them out of the way (they annoy me). But just saying...

    Trekking Poles

I know stock varies store to store, but the Costco in Superior CO regularly carries a decent set of Cascade Mountain poles. It's a good, lightweight set - carbon fiber, cork grips, and a variety of tips for whatever style you like. I see them posted on their Web site for $70 but I definitely...

    Case Cleaning 2019

I use ultrasonic only because I happened to have one. A decade ago I was rebuilding an engine as a hobby project and bought one of those huge units off eBay. It works well but I don't like it, and if I get more into reloading enough to justify it, I'm definitely going to get a dry tumbler...

    Finding a gym

We bought a stair stepper this year. It's not a full workout but I definitely see the difference scout hiking after using it a few months. Trying to add 10 steps a week til I can keep up with the kids.
