    base layer

Costco regularly sells the 32-degree line especially around Sept/Oct. I've bought three sets there so far. They're fine. Not great, but fine.

    This Luggage Bag Swallows Gear!

Looks awesome. I've had great luck with Eberlestock products in the past, and I have a bunch.

    camp cocktails

First choice would be my own moonshine, second is whatever a friend brings and I say "thank you" to, third is Maker's Mark. I have just barely enough pride to not get into Margaritaville on a hunting trip! :p

    Advice for new .22 pistol

I think there's a lot to be said for experience when it comes to firearms. When you make hundreds of something vs millions, the one that makes a million of them is just going to have it down a little smoother. I have a Ruger 10/22, a 22/45 Lilte, and Super Redhawk 44mag, and they're all as...

    Sitka cold weather gear

tbh I think we all get oversold on the hype in camo patterns. My best hunting jacket is solid green, no camo at all, and I bump up on deer and elk all the time. Take a shower, brush your teeth, and skip the cologne, and you can wear whatever you feel good in.

    Advice for new .22 pistol

I'm really enjoying my Ruger MKIV 22/45 Lite. It's very accurate, very lite, looks good, and works well. The only thing it's not great at is dealing with subsonics or light loads. Aguila's, CCI Quiet, and others won't cycle it well. The CCI copper worked about 50%, everything else stovepiped on...

    Protest marching

This is a hunting forum. I'd respectfully suggest that we all focus on that.

    CC Hits!

Drew archery any-sex. Wife drew a second-rifle buck tag she was after, so we're both happy. Elk results come out tomorrow.

    Rifle holster for pack

I've used the Kifaru Gun Bearer and it's pretty adaptable to any pack. It's also pretty cheap. I think it depends on your needs and hunting style. "Run and gun" needs a different holster than "spike out and stake out a watering hole at dusk". I thought for years I wanted something that would...

Grizzly Bears Are Getting Out Of Hand

I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion in this crowd, but I could barely read half that article. It was totally sensationalist and full of logical fallacies. If anything, I would think it does more harm than good. Those opposed to allowing increases in grizzly populations already believe...

    New Build....maybe

I'm having that itch for a Ruger Mini-Thirty. I have zero use for it. I just want one. :)

    Water question?

IMO it also depends on the time of year. I've been on scouting hikes mid-June and seen muleys literally standing in streams when I interrupted their drinking. But when rifle seasons kick off they can be anywhere they feel safe, and water isn't what drives their behavior. That's not the case...

Fenced land on state or BLM

There are plenty of fences I cross, but this wouldn't be one of them. As Colorado Cowboy said, there are lots of leases here and I run into them on basically every hike. Usually the only posted sign is a reminder to close the gate, which is a pretty good indicator you're allowed to cross...

Checking wind conditions before range session

Warning: Never go to windy.com without a lot of time on your hands. I could sit there and watch it for hours. :D

Shooting in the rain and wet optics

I really like the elastic-corded see-through caps which give you the option of taking a quick shot without fussing with regular caps, but can still be removed if they get dirty or you have time to make a longer shot. That said, last year I happened to be out while it was snowing and had lost my...

    Baiting Lawsuit Continues

Maybe so, but the question is how MUCH more. We spend a lot of time debating these issues based on "the last time my cousin Eddie saw a bear..." I think it's fun and maybe we're just bored, but it's more useful to look at overall patterns backed up by actual studies of bear behavior. Those that...

    Baiting Lawsuit Continues

That's not been my experience. I know a guy who lived in Alaska until recently who was happy to tell you all about the specific revolver he carried and the loads he used because he had to run grizzlies off his or a neighbor's porch several times a month. I'm with BuzzH on this one. Bears don't...

    Favorite Beer

Interesting to see you distilling that - I've always found if it's good enough to drink, I drink it, and if it's skanky, distilling it makes for a skanky product... Maybe you've got a trick I don't. Then again my shine never lasts long enough to bother aging :) Most of what I homebrew is cider...
