I shoot expandables and have had no issues on elk. My setup shoots a 425 grain arrow at 318FPS. This produces 95lbs of kinetic energy. Your 405 at 288 will work but it is on the low end of what I would consider for elk with an expandable. Your setup produces 74.5 pounds of kinetic energy...

Some great information above from jimss. To add, you really get bucks at their full potential when you have a buck that was born on a good moisture year, you allow him to reach full maturity, and then you hunt him on a year with above average moisture.

I don't think your guess of 4 years is unrealistic at all. Might even be 5-6. From a business standpoint, a price raise is definitely in order. Might slow down point creep a bit.
