Thanks everyone.
I spent some rain days working on what my daypack contains and what it weighs. I also added in rifle weight, bino & harness, even down to the Bic lighter, knife, and other things in my pockets. I found that I pack 31-32lbs of total gear weight counting everything except the clothes and boots I wear hiking in. I dress really light hiking in and keep the layers for later in my pack. It surprised me the total weight was that much, but got me thinking I should train with a bit more weight than I truly pack. I have good lightweight gear and don't feel like I pack a bunch of un-necessary stuff. The biggest weight was almost 9lbs of optics & tripods with the binos, chest harness, spotter, tripod, and adapters. The pack weighs 4.5lbs, the gun 7.5lbs. That's 21lbs and then 2.25lbs of clothes (gloves, baklava, puffy jacket and pants), 70oz water bladder, food, it all adds up. I think many of up pack more weight hunting than we realize.
Maybe I should do the hiking with the pack 3x per week and the other days I hike go without weight but try to go further and faster, it might be better cardio that way and not put so much stress on the knees and other joints. I like the off-road hiking much better than running on the roads and feel it's safer the way some of the people drive anymore, plus my heeler can go with me and get her exercise too. She is getting older and has a bad leg that prevents her from working cattle very much anymore and has packed on the weight since her working days got limited.
