I have my annual trade show meetings in butte, mt.
Ihave been tying mountain biking in with this trip for about 6 years now. sunday I rode the bangtail divide trail out of Bozeman,mt.wow what a trail and ride. 31 miles, 4400 vert loop. I did this solo.
Monday I hooked up with a new guy in the group. I feel I am fit, but he is uber fit. he has done 17 ironmans, and 30 something half ironmans and 40 something marathons. needless to say he smoked me on the climbs, bad, but I smoked him on the descents. that ride was 20 miles and 3800 vert. so just over 50 miles and 8000 vert for 2 days. I am craving fruit right now.

Monday: 11.5mi bike ride.

Tuesday: Decided to use my day off to clear brush. 7:30 - 2:00.

Went back out to continue clearing the area. 3:30 - 7:30.
Between swinging the brush cutter, running the Stihl, and dragging branches to the pile I'm whipped!

Just some minor cleanup to do now. Maybe in a few day! lol

I started up last week walking 2.5 miles per day through the steepest hills close to home. The route is all through pastures so there is rougher ground to help strengthen ankles, not just road miles. After the 4th walk I started putting my Eberlestock Mainframe on with a 50lb bag of cattle mineral strapped to it to help build the legs more. I've also been doing lunges, squats, and push-ups when I get done with the walk, 10 on each leg and 10 squats. Not much yet but it's a start. Hiking with the pack caused no soreness, but the first days of squats did.

I figured out that my I phone has a health app on it and that it has been turned on. In the 2 years I've had the phone it shows I've averaged 9721 steps per day which a friend says is pretty good. I think it is counting some miles I've put in horseback on the ranch. Some of our longer cattle drives it showed nearly 50k steps for that day. Riding is good exercise for the legs and core too, but not much cardio. I think I need to focus on the cardio outside of work. This time of year we spend long hours haying so it's a lot of tractor time also, less physical than much of the year.

I've got a ways to go. I'm thinking of walking with the pack every night I can and increasing distances as time allows. Nights I can't do the walk I will do the T25 video work-outs that help with cardio and lower body strength. I'm shooting for 5 work-outs per week of T25 or walking with the pack, and doing squats, lunges, and push-ups every other day.

Is this a good plan? Sounds like many of you are way better at this than me. I used to be able to count on the work I do on the ranch plus a couple months of hiking the hills to be enough. I will turn 38 this month and have been less active outside of work with a young daughter at home. It's time for a few things to change to make sure I can continue to hunt the harder terrain.

Thanks for any tips.

Monday mountain bike ride. 11 mile with 1,475' of climbing. It was a good workout with a long climb at the start, I'll have to keep doing that one a few more times I think.

Zpooch: Nice ride!

McSeal: Sounds like you've got a good plan. Just be sure to not overdue the pack hikes so as to avoid injury. Maybe due the pack hike 2-3x per week. Most of our mountain hiking is with less than 25lbs in the form of a day pack. Being farm strong, you'll have little issue with the successful pack out when it comes to the weight of your trophy. ;-)
The continued high volume of daily mountain hikes will be your biggest nemesis during your hunt.

Thanks everyone.

I spent some rain days working on what my daypack contains and what it weighs. I also added in rifle weight, bino & harness, even down to the Bic lighter, knife, and other things in my pockets. I found that I pack 31-32lbs of total gear weight counting everything except the clothes and boots I wear hiking in. I dress really light hiking in and keep the layers for later in my pack. It surprised me the total weight was that much, but got me thinking I should train with a bit more weight than I truly pack. I have good lightweight gear and don't feel like I pack a bunch of un-necessary stuff. The biggest weight was almost 9lbs of optics & tripods with the binos, chest harness, spotter, tripod, and adapters. The pack weighs 4.5lbs, the gun 7.5lbs. That's 21lbs and then 2.25lbs of clothes (gloves, baklava, puffy jacket and pants), 70oz water bladder, food, it all adds up. I think many of up pack more weight hunting than we realize.

Maybe I should do the hiking with the pack 3x per week and the other days I hike go without weight but try to go further and faster, it might be better cardio that way and not put so much stress on the knees and other joints. I like the off-road hiking much better than running on the roads and feel it's safer the way some of the people drive anymore, plus my heeler can go with me and get her exercise too. She is getting older and has a bad leg that prevents her from working cattle very much anymore and has packed on the weight since her working days got limited.

Baby is born, back to the workout grind. The hardest part right now is balancing the need for sleep with the need to workout!
