    On The Go Hunting Maps

Here's an update to my earlier review. I just got back from an elk trip, and was able to use OnX, Basemap, and Locus Pro side by side in the field. A lot of reviews focus on specific features, but I thought it would be fun here to focus instead on specific JOBS - what you actually use a tool...

    Fall Color

I'm from the Northeast, and have had some friends complain that aspens just don't color up the way oaks and maples did "back there". I disagree. I've always thought the sight of yellow aspens with white trunks in a snow field is one of the prettiest nature scenes ever. Sorry about the ugly old...

    decker fire unit 82/86

InciWeb has a page on it, with maps updated daily. It's holding steady at 6700 or so acres. It does look like it's straddling some important routes though. Do you have a plan on how to get into where you want to be?

    bear spray

Personal preference. It's more important to practice getting it out than where it actually is. I've carried it both places and personally find on my belt is my preference but YMMV. Practice with it. A charging bear can run 35-50ft a second. If that's how close it is, that's how long you have...

    Rough weather ahead

Heading out in a few days for the Colorado Flat Tops. Rough forecast ahead for most of the Northern midwest this weekend. Keep safe everyone, and good luck!

    On The Go Hunting Maps

I really like how detailed the zoom-in is for offline cached satellite. I use that a lot to find clearings, water sources, and other features. I'll be trying it this year as a replacement for OnX.

    Tactics in Bad Weather

Not sure if you got your dates confused but... "this coming weekend" (the 12th) is Elk Rifle 1. "2nd rifle" is Oct 19-27 (not this coming weekend, but the weekend after)... Vinny's advice is still the same. Deer get pushed out by snow a lot faster than elk. Mule deer will work their way "down"...

Let’s hear hunting stories with the kids

Success! Only took one bird but that was enough to call it a "job done" with my daugthter! She's hooked now and looking forward to next year. Doesn't need to be a big trophy. Sometimes you just gotta get out with them...

    Where do we begin?

You know that saying "If you want to kill elk, go where the elk are?" I think the first and most important rule is NOT to assume it's totally different from other kinds of hunting. Go where the animals are. Hike on out there and look for them. Find their sign, learn their behaviors, and the...

    Where do we begin?

I think it depends on a lot of very personal decisions. The best place to hunt is where you WANT to hunt. I mean, folks think of Colorado and surrounding states as "elk destinations" but there are plenty of elk hunters in Nebraska (which isn't exactly "mountainous"...) and even as far East as...

Late to the game, advice for private land access?

I guess it depends how good you are at "schmoozing" people. You could always accept paying a trespass fee, in which case just contacting any of the ranches usually turns up at least 1-2 that'll let you on. If you want to stay free, that's not a bad tag though. There are plenty of spots to poke...

    On The Go Hunting Maps

I can't speak for everybody, but my experience has been I value tech without staring at my phone all day. If anything, it's a time SAVER over tracking where I am and taking notes with paper maps and pads. (Although I do carry a paper map as a backup.) But equally important, we have young kids in...

    On The Go Hunting Maps

In the lower right corner there's a plus button to add "things": markers, photos, etc. One option in there is Offline Maps. Tap that, then New Map. Pick Standard/Pro based on what you bought, scroll to the area you want to save, and adjust the sliders for map area and detail. (That's the part...

    hiking vs jogging to prepare

I got a stair-stepper and I've been hitting it every day. I try to push myself to do 10 more steps in each set, each week. I think it helps. I don't know about the rest of you but I can walk all day if it's level. At my age and given I was never a star athlete to begin with, it's just...

    2019 OTC 2nd rifle elk

Sorry I missed that you said it was OTC. Still, it's going to be a tough one IMO. I was up there two months ago and the whole area still smells like a camp fire. Best of luck either way!

    Colorado 44 2nd season

I don't know if 44 is the same way... But in 43 (and many other zones) there are both "migratory" and "resident" elk herds. The migratory herds you have to catch heading from high to low ground with timing based on the weather. The resident herds make regular rotations from ranch land up into...

Split Llama Rental 2nd Season Unit 35?

It's a little late for me to be planning anything, I normally start planning and locking down details a few weeks after the draw results come out. But if you PM me next year I'd be happy to try to coordinate that.

    Best Western Caliber?

Here we go again :) I've got a buddy who swears by his 6.5CM. I still like my 30-06. Personally I think it's all about your goals. I came to hunting and shooting later in life - my parents never did it - and I know I'll never be a sniper. 200yds is a "good ways off" to me, and 300 is my ethical...
