Getting things ready for your seasons.

We just had opening of archery (with xbow) - had a little one duck the arrow at 30 yds from a 350 fps xbow. They are quick. Was trying to get dad on one or two and he saw 0. I saw 4 at 150 yds, 1 at 30, and 4-6+ at 250 yds. They clearcut the place so more like hunting out west this year...

    Favorite mule deer bullet?

I went from 30-06 to 243 due to it being more fun and easier to shoot. Used to shoot 30-06 150 Sierra Pro Hunters and 150&165 NPs at about 2900/3000 fps. Both are death rays. Shot a pretty big muley with 243 100 gr Federal Blue Box "Power Shok" last year and killed it. Not sure if that's a...

What would be your dream hunt?

Working on it. We are buying Point No. 2 right now, so have maybe 4 or 5 years to go. I doubt my father will go this time but us 50 & 60-somethings will sure give it a run. In between now and then, it'll be back to CO so buddy can land his mule deer. Maybe 2022. We've already got the...

    NA10 Most Bow-Hunt-Able animals...?

I'm deaf - bow hunting is the hardest thing for me to do. Hogs are easy to shoot, whitetails are easy to spook! LOL! I shot a turkey with a bow before while deer hunting. It is the noise thing - I can't hear noises like fabric on tree bark, a squeak from a seat, crinkly leaf, etc. A...

What would be your dream hunt?

I just want a peaceful antelope hunt with a couple buddies and the ability to spot & stalk a couple of herds without some guys crashing the party on us. Enjoy a few brews around the campfire at night while laughing and looking at the stars. That's my dream hunt.

    DIY or guided ?????

This is a great example - the guy did you a favor and let you do your thing, then came back in time to teach you how to hunt the area. Real valuable intel.

    DIY or guided ?????

Happy 50th! I did my mule deer hunt for my 50th last year and managed a nice buck DIY but was ready to shoot a 2x2 by that time. Success rate was 30% for where we hunted and that's what our success rate was - it could have been 100% but one guy passed a small buck, other guy missed 2...

Fenced land on state or BLM

LOL! That's a toughie. Too bad you couldn't/didn't call him from where you were and get the scoop right then.

Shooting in the rain and wet optics

A decent scope should not have any issues when it is raining. I can't imagine not using a waterproof scope/binocular/spotting scope/etc. Most scopes fit this bill - even the cheaper ones.

    What's your personal challenge?

I only had a few things on my bucket list - antelope, mule deer, fishing in Alaska. Been reasonable and been hunting and fishing for a long time. Never cared about elk or "exotics" such as moose or sheep, mtn goats or such. Was big on ducks for a while. Shot 18 species of waterfowl on the...

    Fed checks arrived on time

Getting into this late. 1 month until I can apply for local quota hunts cause traveling is out of the picture for this year. Live to fish another day. My sister has it - got it from her hubby who got it at work but after he put himself on lock-down. He had few minor symptoms, she's got...

    April 7...Decision Day

Good points - I sure didn't like spending $100 for a mule deer point this year. The folks buying points should be reflected in both 2019 and 2020. We apply for the points...

    April 7...Decision Day

A 40,000 application increase in 1 year. Holy Moly! That explains the point creep. That is probably reflected in other states as well. So much for hunter numbers decreasing in the western states...

    Hunting Industry Meltdown?

We tend to discuss the current issues and this is one of them. A melt-down, I'm not so sure but not having income is a big deal. This year is different for everyone, how different remains to be seen. We aren't even a month into this "shutdown" and we have positives and negatives based on a...

    another democrat grab for guns

Yup, those kind of bills will be presented every session until they pass. For whatever reason, the "leaders" want an unarmed populous to lead.

    Gunnison now “locals only”

I agree that the health and wellness of the nation is #1 priority. They just released this for the entire state of Florida: "ORLANDO, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis says he is signing an executive order that will limit people to only essential errands outside their home. Residents must stay...

    Hunting applications during Corona.

The turkey thing is a clue. Buying out of state tags is risky. Would be a good year to try for that super-duper low chance tag, but what if you get it and can't go? Hope this thing works itself out sooner than later. Doing the Pref point bit. And working up a better load for the .243 this...
