Put in the special draw with 6 points for 61-1 with general as second choice. Unsuccessful. I knew 61 was iffy but thought would be a dunk. Oh well! Time for plan b and probably c.

It might reflect some frustration in drawing certain areas and the guys have just given up. After 10 years area 124 is still stuck at 2.59%.
Unit 124 used to have darn good draw odds (12% in 2010 and 22% in 2011) for those with max points in the special draw. Then one of the magazines did a write up on it. I was not happy about it when I saw it come out. That was the end of the good odds.

Burnt 5.5 with my partner on 11-9 elk. It actually took 6, but apparently we got it in the random with 1:18 odds. I'm pretty happy.
Good luck! I thought about 11, then opted out for no other reason than I know I wouldnt draw.

Dang me, 59-1 went from 10% odds last year to 5.66% this year...needless to say - unsuccessful. Applying for 1 NR tag is almost too stupid for words but it'd be cool to see that country and catch it on the right kind of snowy year.

Thanks. We'll see what happens. I've hunted near there in the past, and it's an easy drive for me. A scouting trip is in order, that's for sure..

No tag for me. Thought I had 100% odds with my points and based on last year's data in the unit I applied for. Oh well, guess 'point creep' has become 'point fast walk' now.

Drew 39-9 with one point in the regular draw. Looks like I drew the only NR tag in the random. After hunting general tags in Montana the last couple years I'm pretty excited to learn some new country.

Probably because they signed with an outfitter, who told them all they would need is a gen tag. Once your points pile up it gets tough not getting a tag year after year going after some great areas. Just cashed my 8 on unit 19.. first time ever in that area but have a connection that says he'll get us into some good areas. from then on out it's gonna be GEN every other year, and hopefully a NM once in a while.

I'm always amazed looking at the draw odds sheet after it is posted. 1 person used max points on a general tag, 2 with 9 points, 3 with 8 points, 9 with 7, 12 with 6, 22 with 5 etc... Tons of money just thrown down the drain. It looks like the special wasn't a guarantee this year with zero points- if I'm doing my math correctly.

That's the trouble with building points. It doesn't take long before you have more points than you want to burn on an easy to draw area, but you never seem to catch up to the premium areas. I applied for a late season cow hunt at the last minute this January. The odds were 80% last year. This year, the tags were cut 2/3s, and the applications doubled, so I was shut out. That's how they manage herd numbers, so I expected some changes. The tag numbers for an "any elk" tag and the point creep were stable in the GENERAL areas though. Good to see, as we're on for a guided hunt in 2017.
