Curious- Is it safe to assume you have a muzzle break on each? I agree, those both will put a hurt'n on just about anything.

Interesting article. I do love my custom .300 Wby (on a commercial Mauser action). One thing mentioned is reloading....my Wby's (.both .300 & .257) were the hardest calibers I have ever had to develop reloads for. Interesting is the authors bullet choice, the Nosler Partition. 180 gr Nosler partition bullets are all I use for my .300 and it shoots less that 1/2 min groups. I love it.

Mine: .375 AI, in a 9.0 pound pkg. (scoped, loaded, slung). 250 TTSX’s @ 3130 fps. It is used for everything in NA, and fully “Africa” capable. From muzzle to 600+ yards.....very effective on game! It’s not quite as practical for the average shooter as my wife’s favorite cartridge!
Wife: .338 WM, just under 9.0 pounds (scoped, loaded, slung), 225 TTSX’s @ 2950 fps. No explanation necessary.....good for everything in NA, good to 600+ yards, ammo readily available (if you have to buy it)! memtb

I'm a .30 06 guy too. Got one for Christmas when i was 10 years old, a used Remington 742 woodsmaster. Shot a few muleys with it after moving to colorado in 2004 , but I wasn't accurate after 100 yds. Short barrel, used heavily, maybe barrel was copper fouled? Itching for a new one once i scraped together enough $ and chose a Ruger American in ought six. Light, accurate, and i can use it as a tool not an heirloom! Looking to get to shooting 165 gr Accubond or Partitions for double duty deer and elk. Been using hornady SST in 180 gr but not liking performance on elk...

I’m very sorry that I failed to respond to your question, I only recently saw it. Answer: No on brakes! Neither one of us use brakes! The only time recoil is an issue is extended bench sessions! memtb

my 300win.mag. was braked and I swear it kicked more than my .340wby without a brake!
I doubt I'll own another hunting rifle with a brake....

A favorite huh? Tuff question. How about the one I'm carrying at the time. Actually for deer I'd pick my 25-06 one day and 308 the next. Third day I think I'd take my 6.5x55. Wait, all around? Well scratch the 25-06 but whatever I have left I would not hesitate to hunt pretty much anything with, 6.5x55, 6.5x06, 308 and 30-06. Boy several more I could throw in there but don't have them! Actually seldom hunt big game anymore. /getting long in the tooth and worry about shooting something and getting it out! Hunted 1/2 day about two years ago on a private ranch in the breaks of the John Day and looked around me and wondered how I'd get anything out if I did shoot something! These days I'll stick to birds! Now my favorite cartridge there is a 28ga SxS got two!

7-08 and 260 Rem. With an 8 twist, both punch way above their class. 35 Whelen for anything in North America that those two won't handle.

338 win mag is my new love. Very accurate and 150-275 grain bullets Fast and flat or not so fast and brutish in the brush.
that being said therewill never be a more capable all around caliber for the great USA than the 30-06 Springfield. No offense mr O’Connor.

Why you ask, honestly because that's what my dad shot so that's what I asked for my first rifle. Ruger M77 with Tang safety and straight 4x Bushnell Banner scope. Won't change a thing on it one of my son's will get it down the road.
Along with 30-06 a guy can stop at the only gas/mercantile store in the middle of BFE and buy a box of 270. They might be 150 grain round nose but you can get them.

Old post, I know. But... i drew a moose tag 2 years ago and had to decide what rifle to use. .270 ( has killed more elk and deer than I can phathom). 7mm, .300, .338... at first I decided to role with my Tikka .300 win. Then a fella gave me his spill on why I should give a 6.5 cm a go... for moose. I didn't own one yet and decided to buy one and dive down into that rabbit hole for a while. ps, I haven't crawled out of that rabbit hole since. I shot that rifle so well it became my go to. My moose fell to it rather fast. Ended up selling that rifle and getting one in Tikka, supressed. And hot damn! E hoyabke to shoot. I can sit on a bench and shoot all day, raising my confidence in the rifle. Something I hated doing with my .300
Have thought about upping to a 6.5 prc, but inhavent found a reason to, yet. But that .22 arc..... let's talk about that sweet peice of work!

My 300 Winchester short magnum is a pretty good all-around caliber.
It would probably be a tie between that and my 30-06.
Although the last several years I’ve been using a 308 and it is very nice for deer.
