1. When your on a hunting trip and your sitting at your cabin mid-day with a cold beer in your hand and a wet towel around your neck because its 95 degrees and sunny outside and your wife says "its too hot to hunt lets just take the evening off" always follow your gut instinct and know that its highly unlikely that your going to kill something holding a beer crying about the weather....."Lets go give it a try anyhow" "oooook, but we arnt going to see anything"

2. If your walking 75 yards into a public area to check to see if the rifle bozo's from last year left all of their treestands up (which is illegal and are all 5 of them are within 25 yards of each other....strange) TAKE YOUR BOW with you because a 130" + 10 point might jump up in front of you and stop broadside for 2 minutes at 20 yards and look at you.....

That I am not 40 anymore
For sure. I am going to be 80 this Friday and the harder I try, I just realize that what I used to be able to do physically, it just doesn't happen that way any more. I work within my capabilities and don't try doing some of the things (lifting heavy stuff, drinking and eating too much, etc) I did without thinking about it when I was younger.

Live & learn.....well have!

Just the other day I sent off a email to my safari outfitter in South African and mentioned that I am getting older and that I don't move as fast as I used to.

I got a email back thanking me for letting them know and that they would plan accordingly. They also mentioned that so many hunters show up and they have no idea of their age or getting around mobility and have to shuffle the deck as far as which PH goes with which hunter.

Hunt the 2nd week of a 2 week deer season. In south central Wyoming. Got there 3rd day of the season and hunted in T-shirt weather all 6 days. Only saw 3 bucks the entire time hunting dawn to dusk. Got our final buck on the 1st hour on the 6th day. 2 days after we leave it snows like crazy. Still a great trip.

1. Swarovski has nothing on the God given eyesight of an antelope

2. Antelope prefer the tender grass in a spring seep and will come back for more

3. Use terrain features/corridors to conceal yourself as you close in on far off antelope; after 6 unsuccessful stalks, where I got busted over the course of 2 days, I found a small herd a mile out hanging tight (see #2 above) There was a system of gulches and arroyos that spread out beyond the herd. I crawled down into the little canyons, double backed towards the herd, and got within 200 yrds to seal the deal.

The older I get the more I realize I need to stop hunting solo so much.
It’s a real pain on my whole body processing my bear this year. It’s a ton of work and I’m thankful I didn’t kill him a few miles in on some of the hikes I did.

Oh and don’t forget my kill kit in my archery pack next time! Processing a 400 lb bear with a leatherman kinda sucked!
