I took my 7 year old son out this weekend for rabbit/squirrel/dove hunt. Most of the doves have headed south. The cover is so thick rabbits are almost impossible so we focused on squirrels. It was tough hunting in the wind and the squirrels didn't cooperate. It took us almost 2 hours of still hunting before he got a decent shot. He made it count (with the 28 gauge shotgun borrowed from NE69- thanks again Dave). He was so excited we had to stop at several of his friends houses on the way home to show it off. We now have a skinned squirrel hide salted and drying in the garage. He insists on keeping it for his wall because he is so proud of his "trophy" that he worked so hard for.

Sweet! I remember how excited I was when I got literally ANYTHING when I was a kid. I still share that very excitement when putting something on the ground.

That is awesome. And is exactly how I was at that age. Thanks for sharing, I needed this to brighten my day after watching that crap last night. Daphne is going on her first youth deer hunt next weekend. We sure are excited about it!

I remember taking my son dove hunting when he was 7. All he could do was yell "I can't load the gun fast enough!" Single shot 20 ga, so you know the problem. He finally got his limit after 3 boxes of shells.

Impossible to argue with his logic and his smile speaks volumes. I remember my son at 7 or 8 bagged his first squirrel, he was so excited I had it mounted. He is now 30 and still has that squirrel mount. Still brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Good job dad and there will be many more great moment to come.

That is definitely awesome!! The first animal I killed was a squirrel when I was a little younger than your boy while out duck hunting with my dad. I will always remember that and being out hunting with my dad.

That's awesome. :)

My son used to keep a running total of all the different animals and birds he'd killed. He's 19 now and has long since lost count, but when he was 5 to about 13, he could tell you exactly how many total and how many of each type. :D
