Team,

Wife and son are traveling to Houston in the next few weeks. Looking for a reputable ranch, reasonable price to hog hunt at, just looking for a few small feeders 75# or less. Route of drive is Amarillo, Childress, Vernon, SW FT Worth and Huntsville so in a perfect world something on the way. I'm doing the normal internet search but I'm finding out there is almost too much info out there to sort through. Most are all booked due to spring break. Any help or recommendations is greatly appreciated.

I did the same thing a couple of years ago. Call Texas Game & Fish to start with. I also called the Chamber of Commerce on several towns and also local gun shops. I ended up with quite a few leads, but finally did not go for other reasons.

I wouldn't waste your time in the Texas panhandle for hogs. I grew up there and we never had a problem with them, but I have since moved away so things could have changed, but I doubt it. Most of the hogs will be in central, south, and east Texas. I wouldn't start looking too hard for places until you cross I20 going south. That is where you will start to get into more hog country. I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule, especially as you move east, but for the most part they will be south. I would also start looking east of Abilene. They will run there all the way from Oklahoma to the coast.

Things have changed. :)

There are loads of hogs in the canyons and caprock country in the Panhandle. The Rolling Plains area between there and Central Texas is covered up with hogs. Just about anywhere along that route from Amarillo to Houston will offer hog hunting - not so much on the plains around Amarillo, but as soon as you drop off the Llano Estacado into Palo Duro Canyon and beyond, there are hogs just about everywhere.

Things have definitely changed in the Panhandle. Any of the major river basins (Canadian, North Red, Salt Fork, etc) and creeks feeding into them are going to have feral pigs. I've shot roughly 70 in Potter county in the last three years. With that said, the density is probably higher nearer central and east Texas.

Thanks everyone. Tough part was scheduling so late due to spring break and cool weather....lot of places were booked......found a few we are gonna call to talk with em. IMO lots of pigs everywhere but yes, heavier density in central Texas. They are spreading pretty quick though north and west as other have said.

The hog density in the Rolling Plains region of Texas is ridiculous anymore. It didn't used to be so bad, but it is now. If they have more hogs in East Texas than we have from Abilene up to Wichita Falls and into the eastern Panhandle, then I feel sorry for them.

Good luck on your hunt, Slugz. Bring lots of ammo. Hopefully you'll need it. We have a saying here...... KAP (Kill All Pigs).

East Texas will have the higher densities, just from all the river bottoms and habitat. Between the Trinity, Neches, Angelina, Attoyac, Sabine, with all the feeder creeks & sloughs winding through timber company land, it gives them a place to breed until their hearts content with no concern for concentrating around water sources. For a short hunt timeframe, I'd look more to central Texas and areas with limited water so they're a little more predictable since apparently it's already late Spring weather.

I have been going back to Texas for hog hunting over the last 15 years and they are everywhere now. You can pay as much or as little as you want to for hunting. The ranches with true hog problems will not have a limit or trophy fee for their hunting. These ranches may be hunted harder but generally the prices will be lower. This year was a high mast year for trees and fruit bearing plants in Texas so hog hunting was hard in most areas. Next fall/spring should be better hunting as the mast producers generally do not have 2 good years in a row. You can find great hog hunting all along the 287 route from Colorado. Ranches, outfitters and even some small public hunting grounds. Make some phone calls. We hunt family land but just getting the word out locally that you are hunting hogs might get you some additional access. You can be hunting hogs within one days drive from Colorado in west and North Texas.
