I don't think anyone mentioned that Wyoming sets aside 25% of their tags for a random draw that does not take preference points. But that being said you should start buying your Wyoming points this year. When you get a few then you can look at the units draw percentages on the regular draw and special draw. You could very well draw a good tag in Wyoming with just a few points.

When can you start to buy points in Wyoming?

Buy a point this year in Wyoming and start applying or buying points every year after. Remember Wyoming does set aside a percentage of tags for a random draw, no points required. As far as a trophy, they can be found in almost any elk unit but you have to hunt for them. Units with good, strong populations will have some real trophies. You can't harvest a trophy unless you pass up the small guys.

About to do the same for me and most of the family. Deer and Antelope for all of us, only one is collecting elk points. It's very easy, you'll figure it out just fine I think.
