    2nd Rifle Season

Everyone planning on hunting 2nd rifle season better be prepared for snow and muddy ground. This current storm has already dumped almost 1/2" of rain in the last 2 hours at my place near Cortez. It is forecast to last most of the day so we could get a lot more moisture.

Coming To Colorado for the Hunts

One thing I noticed is that there are more non hunting days between seasons. Usually 4th season opens on a Wednesday after 3rd season closed on Sunday. This year there are 2 extra days, opens on Wednesday but 3rd season closes the Friday before. 4 days separation instead of 2 days. Should help...

    Ruger No 1 .300 Weatherby

I am going to do some reloading today. I am going to try neck sizing some of the brass that has already been shot in the Ruger. I also am going to do some tweeking on the screw holding the forend to the action. It is now tight, I will loosen it 1/4 turn and see if it effects the groups. Then...

To eat or not eat CDW positive tested deer

I didn't mention in my op that I do all my own butchering and processing. I debone everything and do not saw any bones, especially the backbone. I also do not leave any fat or glands in the meat.

To eat or not eat CDW positive tested deer

If the deer looked and acted like he was healthy, I'd be eating it. I've shot and eaten tons of deer and one could have had CWD before we were so concerned about it. Just my take.

    Ruger No 1 .300 Weatherby

The set screws that hold the turret to the adjustment post are corroded and I can't get them out. Been on there for 15 or so years without being touched.

    Ruger No 1 .300 Weatherby

The story continues................ Went back to the range and the groups turned to crap. Couldn't really find anything wrong. I had tried 200 & 300 and moved my ballistic turret back to zero elevation and it slid past the stop. Stopped shooting and went home. I tried to remove the turret and...

    Help with iron sights

You can install a new lower front sight. Remove the front sight (If I remember right, they come out drifted to the right as the dovetail is slightly angled). Put it on a flat surface and measure the height. Got to Brownell's or Midway and buy the next higher sight and install it. Should solve...

    6.8 Western

A few years back when the "ultra mags and "short mags" were hitting the market with great publicity, most were introduced and hyped as the greatest thing since sex by the major firearms and ammo manufacturers. My thought then was it was to light a fire under hunters and shooters to buy the new...

2021 new gear dreams and must haves.

Lost a lot of weight and have had to go thru all my hunting clothes and find out what I can still use. Just bought 2 sets of base layer. Took a bunch of stuff to the local church thrift shop. Have enough other stuff to get thru this season. Next year.....who knows? I have lost 50# and want to...

    Ear Protection When Hunting

I wear hearing aids (which I really like) and when I get ready to shoot, I turn them off. It only takes a few seconds. With them off, they also act like an ear plug. Not as good as a regular one, but enough that I can shoot without any hearing problems.
