On the accuracy, that forend screw can and does affect it depending on the tension that is placed on it. On my 22-250 if it is too tight the best group that I can shoot is about 2" at 100 yards. Get it just right and you can put 5 shots into a single hole at 100 yards.

Have you thought about finding a #1 in 300 Winchester mag and then having it re-chambered? While Ruger did make runs of the .300 Weatherby them may command a premium price if you find one, but right now everything is commanding a premium price.

Glad you are alright. I think that I was lucky when I found a few of my .340 Weatherby loads under loaded. And I know what you mean by how Weatherby loads fill the cases to the brim so to speak. It'll be interesting to see if you find a problem.
