6.5 and 7 PRC, what are your thoughts?

Two of us bought Tikka T3 rifles at the same time. I got the 30-06 while he bought a 300 WSM. My ammo was available anywhere and cheap ($18), while his was tough to find and over $50 a box. Now prices have gone up drastically and he had a hard time finding 300WSM.... Luckily he had saved the...

I was finally able to get out on the water between two Canada fishing trips. I dumped it the first two days that I tried to get in it, but finally learned how to shoe-horn myself into it. I have a ways to go before getting my sea-legs, and am far from comfortable enough to go out on Lake...

    2023 draw

A grand slam of sheep will likely cost you a good $500 a pound. Excellent dining.

    2023 draw

OTC as a resident doesn't hurt too bad, but even a general draw tag as a NR will usually end up costing more than buying beef. My recent tags in WY came to $727 for GEN elk, plus $208 for the points; $303 for the cow tag; $21.50 Conservation license; $75 archery lic. Total - $1334 Add...

The 40 acre deer refuge 2023

Mallard; It's amazing how much green wood can shrink after it dries. I cut 20K bd, ft. of cedar, 10K of white spruce, 10K of white pine, 2K of yellow birch from my previous property. I skidded it all out with my 6x6 ATV, paid to have it sawed, then stickered it in my yard for at least a year...

The 40 acre deer refuge 2023

Good to hear from you BC.....what have you been up to? MallardX2 - What kind of wood is that? Do you season it before you build with it?

The ice went out on my lake yesterday, so I hope to get her in the water soon. But, there is so much stuff that I have to do, and I am in the middle of a "broken stuff" epidemic.

Opinions needed for Daughter's new rifle

BUZZ nailed it ref. shooting often and becoming very familiar with your rifle. I owned 3 Remington M700 rifles, all the mountain rifle version; .308, 7mm-08, and 243. My grandson is only 140 lbs, and has shot all of them, and I eventually gave him the 7mm-08 as that is the one that he...

    Point banking revisited..

Here's the bull that I shot in 2006. That outfitter hasn't posted any pics of bigger elk since then, so I guess that I was lucky. The year before he had clients shoot 3 bucks over 190" (he had the mounts that had just been returned by the taxi). The deer hunting has dropped way off since then.

    Point banking revisited..

Thank you Winchester. 2006 was my first guided elk hunt in CO. I hunted in unit 43, and also had a deer tag. My first DIY hunt in CO was in 1979, and my hunting partner and I just stopped at the F&G headQ in Denver and bought both OTC. The area that we hunted now requires max deer...

    Point banking revisited..

We used the point averaging on a guided elk hunt in WY in 2017. Two of us had more than enough pts. to draw, but 4 others had been getting points for a few years less and had never hunted out west before. I had done all the ground work, and we applied as a party, and burned all of our points...

Thank you. I do consider myself to be a fairly good carpenter, but never was much of an artist. I trap shoot with a guy who can carve animals out of wood that you swear are real. My grand-daughter can make a pencil portrait from a color photo that you swear is a black & white photo. Those...

Yes it was. I had snowmobiled into the lake several years ago and in my mind it is more beautiful than Yosemite, especially without all the crowds. I could easily spend the entire summer at various "disbursed camping" spots throughout the west. During that covid year, a lot of other folks...

I found a couple pics from the Wyoming trip, but had to change the aspect ratio because it was too large to post here. I'll give it a try.

I did not keep track of the hours spent on the kayak, and did that because I didn't really want to know. A lot of the time, I could only work for an hour, then had to wait a day or two for the epoxy or varnish to set up for another coat. I also had to make a "practice" build of the bow and...

Tim, that is callled a bifrucated bow. (SP??), In calm seas, the bow is out of the water, but in wind/waves, the lead bow splits the wave and the second bow guides the water to lift the bow. I don't know if I am explaining it correctly, but if you see a modern ship in drydock, they also have...

After a couple long, tough winters, and enduring the covid shutdown. I finally completed my cedar strip kayak. I bought the plans from "Laughing Loon", and fabricated the whole thing starting with live cedar trees on my property. I have extensive canoeing experience, but very limited kayak...

    Who else is...

I have slowly been able to work my way back to my spring goal of 20 pullups and 40 pushups to start my day. Each year it takes me longer to get there, but at least I still can. The pullups was the # needed for a max score as part of the Marine Corps PFT. The other part were 80 sit-ups in 2...

Giving up on Alaska - anyone been to Costa Rica?

The caribou hunting was really crappy in Costa Rica even before the ban. You could book a hunt that was really cheap, but the success rate was dismal.

Should I apply for Antelope in Wyoming or not???

I've shot 7 does in WY, and only one buck when I had the tag. I saw a steady decrease in the antelope numbers since 2015, when the zone that I hunted looked like the Seringetti. I was able to build on my knowledge of the area while gaining points to draw a buck tag again, but now that I have...
