    Let's see something old

1954, I was 12 years old. My first wilderness, backcountry deer hunting trip. Rode horses into camp. I didn't get a deer. I am shooting my 03 Springfield, reworked military stock and iron sights. I still have the gun and shoot it today. 63 years later, still shoots sub moa.

Hunting Conditions in SW Colorado & SE Utah

Just returned from a scouting trip for 4th season elk in SW Co & SE Ut. Condition have sure changed a lot since I was there in mid July. Most of the snow from a couple of weeks ago is gone and it is pretty dry. What is the most shocking thing is the lack of feed. Grass is gone, there are no...

    October 12, 2012

5 years ago today, I lost my Dad. He was 94 and lived a full, productive life. I miss him a lot, especially in the fall during hunting seasons. We hunted and fished together all his life from Canada to Mexico. He taught me how to be a man and all of the values and responsibilities that came with...

    Drawing Odds-Antelope

I was just checking the published drawing odds listed for antelope (doe/fawn) on the Wyoming G & F website. I was really shocked at the number of tags listed as sold for the unit I want to hunt. here are the numbers: year-2010-200 tags;2011-287 tags; 2012-219 tags; 2013-5t tags; 2105-5 tags...

    Reduced Price Doe/Fawn Antelope Tags

Been hunting Wyoming for years and have never done this: Apply for reduced price Doe/fawn antelope tags WITHOUT applying for a buck tag. I have always added them to my buck tag application. I know you can do it, but will they take my pref points that I have accumulated for antelope? I am...

Oldie but goodie for inch MOA

I am still loading a 30-06 load my Dad and I developed 50 years ago. 53 gr 4895 - the key here is it is military surplus powder! 150 gr Sierra Spitzer (Now Called Game King) Shoot it in my 03 sporterized Springfield. Laramie

Duck hunting is ok, but goose hunting a lot better. We have 1000's of resident nonmigratory Canadians. Lots of area for field hunting and fairly easy to get permission. I have shot as many as 100 in a season.

    Tenting on unit?

I don't tent anymore. I have a self contained utility trailer that I converted for hunting. I carry everything in it. Unload it, setup tables, eazyup, stoves and utv. lay the bunks down and we are ready. I almost always camp on BLM in the unit I'm hunting.

    SW Colorado (4 Corners) Report

Saw lots of hunters coming in the last few days. Today was opening of Archery and no one I know did much....too hot! It was 90 today and is forecast to be that or 88/90 all next week and just some clouds, no rain. Pretty damn hot here for sure!

    Hot Waterfowl Reloads

I have a 10 ga coach gun that I shoot in some cowboy action shoots. We do some exhibition night blackpowder shoots at state matches. Here is a shot of me pulling both triggers at once. I load 125 gr of BP and 2 1/2 ounces of shot and it does go bang!!

    Eclipse

I remember in high school science class we looked at the sun using exposed film. I got out some exposed 35mm film strips and doubled them up. WOW...really got a great view of the eclipse here in SW Colorado. Probably 80 to 85%, definitely got darker and cooler. Pretty cool..............

    Google Earth

Don't know how many of you use Google earth for research, but some of my general observations. I do use it, but only for an overview of the country. I just got back from a scouting trip to a unit here in SW Colorado that I have never hunted or even been in before. I looked at Google Earth...

Which Dog Breed For My Needs

I have hunted (and owned) bird dogs for 60 years. You need to ask your self what kind of a dog do you want....pointer or flusher. IMHO that more than breed should determine the upland bird hunter dog. As far as water goes, hard to beat a lab. I have only owned one pure pointer, a GSH. It did...

    Shotgun of Choice

In Cowboy Action, all I shoot is black powder. Here is a picture of my 10ga during an exhibition night shoot. I load it up with 120gr of BP & 2 1/2 oz of shot in solid brass cases. Pretty spectacular, especially when I pull both triggers at once (which is only once per shoot...ouch!).

NR Pref Points for 2018 Draw

Just bought my point for deer and antelope, now have 12 for deer and 5 for antelope. I think I'll be able to get tags for both next year for a combo hunt. Been sitting on the deer points since the points started, so now I'll use them.

    Monsoon Season

Here in SW Colorado our Monsoons have started. The last 4 days have had thunderstorms in the afternoons. Been pretty hot too, in the low 90's. We have had some isolated lightning strike fires too. One west of Durango (Leightner Creek area) was big enough to need a lot of manpower. I am going to...
