    scope for western hunting

Leupold VXIII 6x18 mounted on my custom .220 Ackley Improved Swift. This is the scope I mention in an earlier post that started out mounted on a Ruger M77 25-06, my go to rifle for deer and antelope (no has a VXIII 4x14 40mm on it). I initially thought the 6x18 would be great for antelope...

Relocation to Hotchkiss, CO (North Fork Valley) advice

Montrose is pretty big town and growing. I have 6 acres. I was vacant land with irrigation shares. We designed and worked with a contractor to build our home. There are lots of places that have seasonal irrigation water that really opens your options. I have 5 shares of water (from May 1 to Oct...

    GPS vs Tablet

I have a Garmin Oregon 600 that is great. I also have a couple of the state landowner chips for it. Lots of the time I need my reading glasses to really get a good view of the info. I am thinking about getting a tablet to transfer data into from the gps so I can see the data from a larger...

    New Truck!

Loved my 99 F350 4x4, powerstroke. Put over 300,000 miles on it. Sold it in 2015, 17 years after I bought it new. Engine & tranny had never been apart, just servicing. Had a couple of issues on trips in 2015 and decided to get a new one as we were planning a 3 month trip to Alaska towing our...

    Hunting during the Rut

I have been hunting antelope for 40 years and this year was the first time I have ever hunted them during the rut. It was difficult to say the least. Usually hunt in mid to late September before the rut starts. This year here in southern Colorado the rut was full on the 1st of October. The...

    Got some bad news today,,,dammit!

After my antelope hunt, I had an appointment at the hospital for a CT scan on my shoulder. The ortho dr wanted a more concise view of the damage before my upcoming joint replacement surgery. Much worse than expected, I need a bone graft too., which he doesn't do. I have been referred to a...

    Pinto Fawn

Finally got some pictures of a "Pinto" fawn that was dropped this summer. The doe shows some spotting, but not like this little tyke. Really pretty. We have quite a few mule deer that are here all the time. Bucks come in during the winter for the rut and then pretty much disappear.

    Heading Out In The Morning

Got back this afternoon. Had a great time and saw some new parts of Colorado...at least for me. I did fill my tag on Saturday afternoon, opening day. Left home on Thursday morning driving about 200 mile to the turn off for the area I was going to hunt. Drove about 15 mile on some pretty rocky...

    Heading Out In The Morning

Heading out in the morning for my Colorado antelope hunt. I was given a suggestion to look at an area east of my place and last March spent some days looking there. Saw a fair number of them so I cashed in my 14 points for a tag. There are only 25 tags, so should be a good hunt. I saw 2 nice...

    .220 Ackley Improved Swift -WOW!

Just got back from the range checking out my 25-06 before antelope hunting a couple of weeks away. Decided to take my custom .220 Ackley Improved Swift and shoot it too. I just finished re-bedding it. I wasn't too happy with the bedding job I did several years ago. # shot group at 100 yards...

    Freezer cleanout?

I only feed my dog dry commercial food. For me, I buy the food with the highest protein value, must have over 30%. My last lab lasted 14 years and my Springer before that 15 years. I don't put water on the dry food as I believe the dry food helps keep their teeth in better condition. I do...
