    Knives

I've processed elk with no more than a large butcher knife that we used every day in the kitchen. But when I grew up I got a fantastic set of Gerber kitchen knifes. They hold a edge and fit my hands. The large butcher knife makes quick work of a boneless backstrap. For getting around the...

    2024 Hunts

I know some hunters who draw a cow elk tag only to shoot a calf. They say that they are a lot easier to pack out and the eating can't be beat.

    2024 Hunts

That's when you pass the bigger bucks and shoot a fork horn.. I'm just collecting points. I doubt that I'll draw my muzzle loader deer tag for either unit. Points for elk and antelope.

    Utah Applications are Open

For me it is a toss up between bison and moose for the top spot in just about all wild game here in North America.

Help me decide what to do with 30 Utah elk points!

Have you looked at the points required for the units on the Utah statistics page/report? Personally with the heavy cover I would rule out the Boulder unless you have lots of time to scout it. That mountain is covered in lots of very thick cover. Manti would be a fun hunt for both of you...

    Hunting near Salt Lake

For deer that's a yes, does he archery hunt? He should also get a LE deer and elk point along with a once in a lifetime point. Is he a resident now? If so he can put in for: LE deer or LE elk but not both. 1 OIL animal. If he is still a non resident he can put in for everything. LE deer LE...

    Hunting near Salt Lake

Just a rough going over. All deer tags are draw only and for the general season they work on a preference poiin-between. Rifle hunts usually require 2+ points. LE deer tags are draws but work on a hybrid bonus point system. You can draw a tag with 0 points or max points and everywhere...

    Wolves

That's because they only accepted educated wolves that know where the states border are. You can see that they know where they are at by not crossing into Wyoming but only running east west along the border

    Utah Applications are Open

Hunting bison in Utah is a pipe dream of mine. I applied for years while I was a resident and it was a random draw, then I couldn't afford to foot the full price of the tag along with putting in for elk so I got behind when they started the point system. Now I am getting up there in age...

    New Bows???

Every now and then I'll go out with some friends to shoot our bows just to see if I remember how. I find that my 28 year old Browning still shoots like it should. I can't imagine buying a new bow every couple of years just to have the newest and latest technology. Sometimes I wonder how we...

    Utah Applications are Open

Haven't seen it posted yet so I thought that I would throw it out here for lucky applicants. I put in for Utah's HAM's hunt for Floy Canyon. There is a single non resident tag and since I can't hit the lottery I might get lucky on this one. This hunt is iron sights only for handguns...

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

If the Colorado leglesature has their way this year non residents will need to think before heading here to Colorado with a firearm. Two laws that they are pushing are requiring you to have liability insurance for your firearm, the other is your firearm will need to be locked up in the trunk of...

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

I've always been for applicants loosing their points when they return a tag, except for limited reasons such as medical, military, and just a few more. Most return tags just because they are not seeing the quality of animals that they expected.

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

One thing that I wonder about is just how well the commission gets the word out that they are going to have a meeting and are soliciting comments. I won't say that I didn't see something but I can't remember seeing anything about it. The CP&W web site is very poorly designed for someone...

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

What it's coming down to is that as hunters we are our own worst enemies. We all complain about point creep but want to keep everything as is instead of looking at ways to get hunters through the draws quicker. That's where I'd like to see all points used for any tag that is obtained through...

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

The big thing is I don't care if you have a D, R, I, or whatever behind you name when it comes time to vote us hunters need to stick together. I can understand those just getting into the hunting game wanting a random draw, I also understand those of us who have accumulated a number of points...

Draw Process Working Group Recommendations on Primary Draw Methods & Preference Points

Once they start the point game it would be extremely hard to go back to a random draw. Even those with just a few points would raise a ruckus.
