    Cedar Gnats-No Seeums

I can pretty well ignore mosquitos and blackflies...they can be annoying, but tolerable. BUT, those no-see-ums cause the same reaction for me as CC had. I too am a strong advocate for Permethrin that JimP mentioned, but you do have to carefully follow the directions and never use it like bug...

    How are preference points weighted?

I agree with Hilltop. The point creep for GEN elk has been very gradual, and I don't think that you will have any problem drawing as a group. BUT, S*#! happens, so the split option may be worth considering.

    base layer

You don't need to overthink the base layer concept too much, other than to avoid cotton and cotton blends. I have worn the light weight army issue poly (Polartec), light weight merino wool blend (KUIU), heavier merino (Minus 33), and others. I used to teach winter camping, and led groups...

    Truck Topper project

I finally got the trucks washed & set up for the finished topper comparison. The lighter colored one is on the Dodge RAM & is made out of northern white cedar. The redish colored one is on the GMC and is made out of eastern red cedar. Project complete.

    Draw Stats Posted

It looks like there was a slight suppression in the point creep in the units that I have hunted or have interest in. Unfortunately, I have no apps in CO this year, so I suspect there will be an uptick next year when we do plan on applying for tags.

    Advice for new .22 pistol

I have owned a variety of .22 pistols thru the years, including a Ruger Mark I , Erma Luger, Ruger Single Six, and a S&W M41. At present I still have the Single Six revolver as it is my wife's and she won't let me sell it, plus the magnum cylinder is a nice switch-out. I love the M41, but it...

Daughters first and I got mine

We finally have confirmation that there really is a "Bigfoot". Congrats.

    Wyoming Unit 100-6 Cow Hunt

Ditto on staying closer to the unit. Be sure that you have a good plan for meat management, as the weather during the type 6 hunt (Oct. 15-Dec. 1) can be just about anything. If you come across a cow, there will likely be a number of them and it's easy to have 3 on the ground at the same time...

    Getting ready any help?

As a life long runner, walking bores me. BUT, the slow creep of aging catches up with us all and we have to pay heed to it. So now at 67, my primary preparation for western hunts is what the military call "rucking". Keep your weight in check, maintain general fitness at all times as best you...

    The Memes Thread!

I think that was a "Far Side" cartoon from many years ago. It has always been a favorite. I can easily picture kidoggy in the front of the boat.

    Elk draw

    Wyoming unit 115

I have hunted 115 four times for antelope, once with a buck tag, and the rest with doe tags. General comments: have the WY chip or ONYX map to stay off private as it is checkerboarded. If you haven't experienced western gumbo mud, then you aren't prepared for it when it rains or snows...

    How much to tip?

I've always disliked it when tips are just added to your bill, such as is common for larger groups in a restaurant. A gratuity is supposed to be voluntary, and a reward for good service. I have done a number of guided horseback hunting trips, and use 10-15% as the baseline for total...

    Fed checks arrived on time

I don't understand why the federal government can't just give everyone a check for a million $. Then none of us would ever have to work again. I hope that you can recognize the sarcasm in this comment.

    Things are opening up!

The slow-mo opening in MN is taking place. I actually got a call from my dentist yesterday (a Sunday no less) for an appointment today. Now if I can just get them to give me a haircut as long as I am already in the chair.

    2020 Fishing

It looks like the US/Canada border crossing may be shut down for another month. If so, my second fishing trip will be cancelled or rescheduled. Haven't seen anything definative yet.

    Official Post Padding Thread

Spring projects galore. I've fixed a lot of things that were just sitting there waiting for me. The hardest project is also the most rewarding one, and that is clearing new pushouts on my mile long driveway. After a very tough winter, I finally talked myself into buying a small tractor with a...

    Altitude sickness

I have taken Diamox (or the generic) with the only stated side effect of "frequent urination". Since I do that anyway, I guess that wasn't much to deal with. That said, I found out in numerous trips after that I didn't really need it. It is hard to predict who will have problems and who...

    Everyone!

I got out of the Colorado lottery when they joined the ranks of states that required a "qualifying license" purchase even to apply for points. So, for this year I again applied for a late season cow tag in WY that for some reason I seem to beat the odds drawing. My expected draw will be for a...

    General Elk Archery vs Rifle

Keep in mind that in some of the GEN areas, the mule deer season starts Sept. 15th. I have hunted in H 4 times, and will have a tag there again this year. Near the road there are scads of hunters by the 14th, but none where we had bush-wacked to. I always got my deer, and did see some elk...
