Please critique my caribou gear list

I'm going on a caribou hunt this fall out of Kotzebue Sept 17 to 24 with a couple friends. It will be our first caribou hunt, and our first time on the tundra. I've had some time on some bad weather days to put together my initial gear list of what I am thinking of taking. I'm sure I have...

    Plantar fasciitus

I'm doing the water bottle rolling and got several insoles to try. I am going to try to get this whipped, I know it will take some time though. Thanks everyone.

    Plantar fasciitus

Thanks guys I'll check into those. I stole the Lathrop and Sons insoles out of my hunting boots to go in my work boots today, I'll run those until I can get to town and check other options.

    Plantar fasciitus

Anyone tried any insoles that help with this? I went to the doctor today and he told me I should not wear my cowboy boots every day, gave me some stretches to do, and told me to stay off my feet when possible. Working on the ranch staying off my feet won’t work, going to do the other options. I...

Looking to trade some whitetail information

I know 14 got hit hard with EHD in 2012 and is still recovering. I don't know about 11. I'd concentrate on fields for the early season unless you will be running cameras and feeders or food plots. The pasture deer are scattered and with leaves on they are tough to spot. I think patterning a...

    Just can't fix stupid...

A friend spent 25 years as an outfitter. He had a group of clients from the east coast who came every time they could draw. They spent the whole trip drinking, playing cards, and telling lies in the camp. They would venture to town to buy sets of elk sheds to get mounted and take them to the...

5.56 Coyote Load? 223? FMJ? HPBT?

I've been happy with the 73gr ELD-M superformance ammo since I switched to it. Small sample size of 2 coyotes so far though. I used the 55gr V max for years with good results, but wanted a little more for the running away or quartering shots. From my 20" AR the load shows 2785fps. I should...

    WYOMING Unit 82 Deer

Lots of deer and LOTS of people. It depends on the experience you want. There are not a ton of places to get away from people. It was pretty easy for us to find deer when there but much harder to find a mature deer.

    Rethinking Deer Gun

I have shot several deer with the 25-06 and a lot more with the 243. With good bullets placed well they work very well. I use them now mostly on antlerless hunts when I can take my time and pick broadside shots. Even at 250 to 350 yards they do very well. I've had good luck with Sierra...

    CO 2nd season story

Thanks everyone. I do seem to get the most satisfaction out of the toughest hunts. Darn sure not to the point I’ll pass on a good animal early or easy though! Take success when and where its available.

Nosler E Tip 300 win mag

I emailed Nosler last week about when they might make more of the E tip ammo. Their reply was nothing scheduled at this time. I hope they keep making it. It was pretty darn good quality ammo for $40/box at today's prices.

What to top my new rifle with

That is one of the reasons I personally like the Huskemaw scopes, or any scope that can have a yardage or MOA turret but also have a cap over it. That is one of the things that attracted me to the VX-6 Leupold's in the first place. I set the turret to 200 yards and screw the cap on at the end...

What to top my new rifle with

I was a Leupold guy for years and still am except for scopes I will dial. I had 2 of the VX-6 scopes that had issues dialing elevation and returning to zero. They went to leupold and came back with saying replaced erector system. I sold them and went a different route for dialing. I have a range...

    Best Western Caliber?

My pick for only one western rifle would be the 7mm Rem Mag. I shoot a 300 win mag or a 264 win mag at almost all big game. If I was to have only one I'd split the difference and go with a 7mm Rem Mag. I'd probably shoot something in the 160gr range at everything unless I went after moose or...

    Best Western Caliber?

I've been shooting 140's through my 264 win mag at a mild 2900-3000fps depending on which bullet I use (Berger 2914fps, Accubond 3000fps) for a lot of years. It has always done great for me with easy recoil to handle. If I didn't already have my old 264 I'd already have a 6.5 PRC. A long...

What to top my new rifle with

SWFA scopes are hard to beat in fixed power for a cheaper option. I found a used SWFA 3-15x42 that tops my 25-06. It has dialed perfectly in my limited use of it and the MOA reticle works well. I personally would rather have a 2nd focal plane for hunting though. My hunting rifles that I dial...
