2021 new gear dreams and must haves.

I really don’t need anything but that won’t stop me from buying some things. I don’t need them this year, but want to get a Storm Star tent and Kutana rain pants from Kuiu. Going to Kodiak next year for Sitka Blacktail. We will have a 6 man Cabelas Alaskan Guide tent or 8 man tipi, but with 4...

Help me decide. Model 7 caliber change.

The 140gr accubond has served me well on game up to elk size in 26, 27, and 28 cal over the years. I’d lean toward the 7mm-08 with that bullet personally from your two options. For deer or antelope have you tried a 130 accubond or sirocco? I’ve had good results with both. The BC advantage of...

The 1 Thing You Learned- Rifles

Good thinking. My buddy and I both use our 300 win mags on hunts we fly to. They both like the same E tip load, so we can share ammo. We each pack ammo both in our bag and gun case. That way if something gets taken we dont lose it all. Also anywhere in AK with ammo sells 300 win. Not the case...

The 1 Thing You Learned- Rifles

Check turrets after flying and use non-TSA approved locks on gun cases. A buddy knocked my rifle over when we were packing before our caribou hunt last fall. I have a 100yd range in my yard, so we went out and shot 5 shots through it right quick, confirmed zero was fine, turned it to 200, and...

    Hunting Wyoming Elk in 2021?

Burned 7, we will see if I draw. I should by last years results but who knows. I don’t have a good back-up plan as of now but I’ll be hunting somewhere.

    sleeping bag syndrome

I should add, I use a HPG mountain serape as my bag for temps over 40. I also use it as an over blanket when its real cold and weight doesn’t matter to much with my Slickbag at times. Its a versatile piece, warm as an insulated poncho over layers glassing or for an unplanned overnight. In AK it...

    sleeping bag syndrome

I realize this is an old thread but figured I’d post anyway. I’m still using my old Kifaru slickbag 20 degree. It still works great. I use a Thermarest x therm pad thats also warm. My hunts I use it on are primarily later season gun hunts. I really like the synthetic bags. I’ve dried so much...

Please critique my caribou gear list

Hunt went really well, we all tagged out. Great time in beautiful country. I ended up writing an article on the hunt for another site, not sure if I should mention the name here. PM me if you want the info.

    AK. Bound!

I hunted caribou out Kotz last year. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck, I loved it and will go back.

    2020 Whitetail Success Thread

Good to hear from you too. I’m getting ready to go after the yotes. Checking the zero on the AR tomorrow and the Foxpro is charging. Between the caribou hunt and deer season I have not got much predator hunting done.

    2020 Whitetail Success Thread

Got this guy last night. 172.5” gross with 40” of mass. 2020 has been a bad year in a lot of ways, but the hunting has been great for me. AK caribou and a great buck to finish the hunting season. Buddy gave me the buck’s sheds he found last year.

Warmest socks or boots for cold weather sits

I have good luck with the Cabelas inferno boots. Warmest thing I’ve tried. Have to be careful to be quiet walking in them though, they are bulky.

What Do You Consider Long Range?

I practice a lot out to 800 yards. I enjoy shooting that far and feel it makes me better at closer shots. When I started bowhunting the old guy who owned the archery shop I went to told me to put a target on a round bale at 80 yards. Learning to be consistent at 80 would make 40 seem easy he...

    Ammunition shortage

I’m not predicting an end before next summer. I don’t know if prices will ever fo back to what they were last year.

Your Favorite Rifle And The Story That Goes With...

I thought about going with a 338 win mag instead of a 300 win mag when building the second rifle. I decided that I did not want the extra recoil in the light rifle. I also decided that if I can ever afford to hunt a big bear, I can afford a 20” barrel 375 Ruger to hunt it with. I already have a...

Your Favorite Rifle And The Story That Goes With...

My family was not big game hunters so I don’t have any heirloom guns with a rich history. I grew up on the ranch quail hunting with my Dad but not big game. My favorite is “Maggie” my custom 264 win mag M70 by Flint Hills Gun Works. She has been rebuilt and improved a couple times, but she...

    Your Biggest Buck

Some of the toughest bucks of any species to score have no exceptional features, but are not weak anywhere. I shot a 9 point whitetail last year that fit this description. He had decent width, mass, and length of beam and points but wasn’t exceptional anywhere. Nothing stood out to judge the...

    Your Biggest Buck

My best just over 200” gross. Also a 198” whitetail that grew forks on some points and has a 24” inside spread. He had some muley traits but it’s a 3 hour drive to the closest muleys.
