I carry a 40 on my hip while hunting and on my pack belt while packing- non grizzly areas. I'll second that 2 legged predators are way more likely than 4 legged ones. The 40 is plenty for that.

Excellent! I had my 13 year old out shooting yesterday practicing for his elk hunt coming up. He is shooting as good or better than I am! I think an elk is going to be in trouble if he gets an opportunity.

If you use a bonded 150 it will work fine. I prefer 165 grain as it is ballistically superior in a 30-06. Moose aren't any harder to kill than an elk in my experience.

I umpired 42 games this summer. Just added it all up... My gas for my Texas fishing trip and my Wyoming elk hunt are paid for with a little excess and honestly had a great time doing the games. If gas goes down, I might even have enough left over for another spontaneous trip.

You won't be leaving 2 points on the table for general. Point creep is going to be steep for a while so my guess is it will take 5ish to guarantee a general tag next year. Enjoy the heck out of that tag by the way. It may be 8-10+ years before you draw another.

Elk are harder but beyond the tag cost, I don't really feel they are much more expensive. Gas would be the highest expense and you pay that getting there regardless of species. 3-5 day cow hunts give you a good shot at success in some areas IF you can find decent access.
