Hey all,
I've been kickin this around my head since Sat. after about slicing my thumb off skinning my antelope. I will for sure cut myself at least once on every animal I take care of. Well I had the antelope hanging and was caping it out. You know the spot that is always hard to get of on the chest ? I was pulling down hard and ran the knife between the hide and meat and sliced right the the hide across the top of my thumb on side of knuckle about an inch and a quarter long. I was pissed and it was flowing . I grabbed paper towels and rapped around it. It wouldn't stop. I knew it was a fairly bad cut but tried to ignore it. I got the head and cape off and before I started to brake down the carcass I said I'm going to get same big band aids and surgical tape to put on it. I went to my pack and my trusty kit was not there. I had left it home. First time since 1988 when I back packed into Cedar Breaks Wilderness in Ut. by myself and shot a buck first day. I boned it all out and went to saw off the antlers and I had forgot my pack saw. Can't blame age/memory on that time. I had a brand new knife so I thought well, I'll just stab the skull to make a hole ( no, not yet...) and then just work my knife back and forth to cut it off. Well it worked eventually. I had all meat loaded in my pack ready to go. Well there was this little piece of meat hanging from the hide on the skull plate. I just had to take that off. I grabbed on the wet piece of meat with my left hand and wacked it with knife and right across the top knuckle on my baby finger like butter. The end of my finger was hanging down and I couldn't move it. Figured I had severed my tendon. I wrapped toilet paper around it because didn't even have a bandaid let alone a first aid kit. Threw on my pack and hiked out about 3 mi.. got back to truck and washed it out and wrapped a towel around it and drove back home 8 hrs.. Next day I called around and both orthapedic surgeons were not in town. The one was going to be back next day. Went to him and he says I can't sew it up because it's been 2 days. I said huh ? BS. Fix it. He asked do you use your hands for a living ? I said doesn't everybody ? I'm a phone tech. He said ok. He stuck the novocain needle right into the middle of it and I came unglued ! Then it got numb...He sewed the tendon back together and sewed up the cut. I told him I'm leaving tonight to back pack in 6 mi. up top near Mt. San Gorgonio to meet my friend who was expecting me yesterday. He gave me a splint for finger and said bring me back some deer meat. Walked all night and found friend bout 10 pm. I kicked his tent. He said where you been. I said move over, I'll tell you in the morning. Okay, back to topic. Since then I've made and added to my military first aid kit. I've acquired fish hook sewing needle and thread sewing kits (remember the story about falling of a Cliff at night while hunting in Co. ? I used a regular needle and thread but I had it). I have surgical tweezer's (awesome),hemastat, surgical scissor's , fire starter, magnafying glass, space blanlet, lighters, matches, chapstick, sugical razor's,a pen, a pencil, allen wrench for scope mounts, aspiren, pain killers, surgical tape, crazy glue (very important you will see),iodine, neosporne, and much more, all in a pack that is about 5x5x2 in. weighes maybe 12 ounces. I guess it pays to work in two hospital's and have doctor's and surgeon's as friends... So back to last Sat.. I didn't bring my first aid kit. I was mad at myself to say the least. I found some surgical tape and 2 bandaid's in my truck. I put the bandaid's on but was to wet/bleeding to stick. I wrapped the tape around it a few times and said so be it. Kept paper towel over that. Eventually it stopped bleeding. Cut up carcass and loaded everthing up and went to town. Went in little store and found some crazy glue. Washed and dried my thumb and pinched cut together and glued it. Wrapped surgical tape around it again and was good for drive home. I know I cut nerves and maybe part way into tendon because It's numb and can bend only a little . Good to go though. I have more stiches in my body than an old couch !
So, I'd like to hear from other's what they carry in their "back pack" for first aid and any good stories too since you had to suffer through another novel of mine...

I did fall asleep once on the way through the post.. Haha just kidding Don!
I'm bad, as clumsy as I am, I don't carry a first aid kit. I do have some sweet camo bandaids in my camper though. I have a couple first aid kits given to me for like Christmas gifts and such but never carry them. I usually carry a little baggy of excedrin because I get migrains and then I just want to shoot everything and everyone.. I just carry my SPOT, that way I can just call for help if I break a leg or something. I'm pretty used to hurting myself so It usually doesn't phase me much. If I didn't come out cut up, bleeding and in pain after a day of hunting, I would be surprised.

Charity ! Thanks Jen. You are always falling asleep...
I guess nobody else gets hurt either. You should at least carry the min.. All it takes is one time. Then , you may know what else to carry...I've hunted with guy's who never even carried a bandaid and I always had to play doctor . Common sense. Are you pretty used severing tendons and cuts and slices too big for bandaids ? LOL ! Okay mtn. mama huntress. Guess I'm a woosey ! :)

I carry a small first aid kit with me at all times. As well as fire starter supplies in case I get lost. I just purchased a 4 person med kit and would have bought the 7 person but they were out. I guess I have only cut myself once on a deer but it barely bled. I cant imagine what I would do if I got cut badly. I knew a few people who were field dressing their animals and cut their artery in their legs and died from it. So I would rather be prepared.

Alright ! now were are rollin' ! Somebody I can relate to. Pretty scarey cutting your artery... I cut myself often and a few good oned cutting up animals. This last time and the time I cut through my tendon were the worst. First time I learned. First aid kit all the time. Last time I forgot...24 yrs. later. At least I wasn't in the boonies somewhere. I cut something in my thumb. It's numb and cant barely bend it. Add some crazy glue and good surgical tape, like the kind the use in ER rooms or ED personel use. Real handy sometimes. Are the kits you are talking about for back pack or like in camp ?

I stabbed myself in the elbow the other day when trying to open a package... I'm used to cutting myself :)

I do carry waterproof matches! Only because I got lost once in a bad rain and then snow storm and couldn't build a fire and was extremely cold...

Guess maybe I just need to go hunting with you so you can play doctor to me!

Note to Don and Jen-Maybe you should try some of those stainless steel fish cleaning gloves! (LOL)

Anyhow, I carry a roll of stainless steel surgical wire, wind proof lighter, extra bootlaces, nail clipper, and strobe light, in addition to a supply of non-latex gloves (which I also wear while dressing game). Another good item when carrying a bigger pack is a Sam Splint for a broken or badly sprained wrist. Be sure to include a few knuckle bandages and fingertip bandages. I have recently added a small pack of anti-coagulant. I keep a first aid kit in each vehicle, and in each pack. A small bottle of Purel etc. is useful to clean and disinfect wounds, as well as sanitizing your hands.

Play doctor....I better behave... :) I am certified in CPR though...;)

You might one day instead of scissor's or razor cut yourself with a broadhead to the bone or trip and stab yourself with a broadhead or like birdhunter said, cut you femoral artery. Then your phone would come in handy. I also cut myself often. I guess it's what you do when you get older or at least me. I've just learned over my many years from accidents and mistakes. If you don't, well... A little tip about fire starting in snow or wet weather. Your matches will do you no good trying to start wet tinder, etc. . You need a fire "starter". There are tablets that burn when wet that you can lay on leaves, grass, etc. to get it started to build on. Or you can use a magnesium fire started than you can shave off pieces and use the attached flint with tool or knife to spark and ignite. Burns something like 1500 degrees. I've used both and the work. Even cotton balls with vaseline in a film canister.I'm not trying to be a survival instructer to anybody but most know being prepared is half the battle. Kind of like taking extra food or water with you. You never know when you are going to be stuck out longer than you intended. So be careful out there. You probably couldn't afford my doctor bill ! :)

Hey Saw ! Glad you joined in ! Nail clippers. Good idea but I carry scissors I guess I could use. Little fold up ones and surgical. I take a bottle or corterizing gel with me but not any in my kit. Great idea. What kind and size is the one you carry in your kit ? I have every kind of bandage known to man in mine also along with gauze. Don't forget the surg tape and crazy glue ! Not the kind in a tube either, in a bottle. The tubes dry out or get punctured. I too carry lighters. Good refillable wind proof butane lighters but what pisses me off is at 8000 ft and above, they don't work ! Wish I could fill one with white gas or something ! Thanks for some ideas Saw !
When you leaving on your trip again ?

WTH is "ED personal use"?
LOL ! I guess you already read by now what it means. You are old school like me and I still refer to a ER when at work.
The tape they use is awesome. It sticks great even when a little wet and comes of easy. Best part, it tears easy when tearing off. It's almost clear looking.
I pick up rolls of it all the time while walking around at work ...:)

That is good to know. With all those damned ED commercials on TV, I was not surprised they had an ED Emergency Room!

Hey, when you are picking up things, have you seen any needle proof surgical gloves? Supposed to be the hot ticket for dealing with Lionfish. My daughter said they do not have any at her hospital because they are too much $$$$$.

We are leaving Saturday night, but it looks like we will be meeting up with Hurricane Isaac when we get there.

Hey saw. I haven't heard of them before. They made out of kevlar ? LOL! I heard about the hurricane tonight on news. That blows . Literally. Never thought of erectile disfunction (ED). Mine's still functional than God ! You made me think of another meaning for ER also...:)
