I'm just curious,
What do the experienced hunters on here think about the "Huntin' Fool" and/or "Epic Outdoors" when used as resources for hunting info?

I see them referred to occasionally on this forum but no real discussion as to whether on not they are useful, reliable, accurate, etc.

Any thoughts?

Huntin fool is ok at best. A few people will answer questions if you post on the forum. The best part is they will give you numbers/emails of previous members who hunted a unit that you plan on hunting so you can ask them specific questions. I feel like that is the only thing on there worth the money.

Don't belong or look at either.

Used to frequent other hunting sites, but now only spend time here. I do belong to several other gun/shooting related websites and look at them daily.

The Epic Outdoors podcast has been a very informative one and I enjoy it. Jason and Adam know what they are talking about. I do not use their service however. Maybe someday in the future

I used to be a Huntin Fool member...I cancelled when the ownership changed. Became a member of Epic when I heard these guys were back. Cancelled my Eastman's memberships too. I only use Epic.

I've had Huntin Fool membership since 1999. I was doing an insane amount of hunt research prior to that, and bought the membership to give me some relief while raising my kids. For someone new to applying for western hunts, its a great resource to bring you up to speed. A $100 one year membership and reading the magazines will bring a person WAY up the learning curve. HF due to their years in business will have the strongest database of members who have drawn various hunts in the past. I've known their current head of research since before he went to HF and he definitely knows his stuff.

Epic is owned by Jason Carter, the son of Garth Carter who founded Huntin Fool. I had a membership with them last year (their first year), but it was too much like HF and really did not bring enough new info to me to be of value so I dropped them this year. I'm quite sure they will get better with time and I may go back in a year or two. The key guys there are all old HF guys and they know their stuff.

I have found the hunt recommendations by these two to be good. The problem being they direct a lot of people to a limited list of hunts. Their draw data has traditionally been very weak, relying on simple odds which really don't pertain in many states.

I really don't need a membership these days, but they are quite helpful to stay abreast of changes in various states. Also I like to know where the big magazines are directing traffic and I like to have a list of former members who have drawn when I draw a new area.

I use Huntin Fool for a lot of my research. The members hunt list and the opportunity hunt section are pretty helpful. Tried Epic this year and will probably give it one more year to get a good feel for it. All the Epic guys were Huntin Fool guys when I first started. The only problem I have with them is they don't go far enough into the mid tier hunt areas. Great descriptions of each states tag systems in both mags though. They both also have digital versions that are very user friendly and are included with membership.

I was a member of HF for many years dropped them 7 years ago, at first I found them helpful but like Umpqua stated I found there information was not kept fresh and seemed to funnel everyone to the same units. And I got tired of reading and seeing Garth and his hunts as one of the main focus of the publication.

When I started to get serious about hunting out west I subscribed to hunting fool and eastmans. Seems to me that HF would only give recommendations for the top 5 units for a species in a state. Not much good when you are on the ground floor of the points game. I like to see all the units like eastmans provides.

I don't have memberships to either one. I have a membership with Gohunt, Eastmans, Western Hunter.
They provide all the info I need.

For me its about hunting every year in at least two different states in order to meet this goal i a have found that there is not one outlet that has all the info I'm looking for if find eastmans, gohunt, huntin fool and hunters trail head all have different info that are helpfull in meeting my goal and not wasting my time on applying for a hunt that will never happen
