How many states do you apply for?

Less and less every year. Once I burn points in Utah & Wyoming I'll be out for good! Wish I'd never gotten wrapped up in these points systems. To much invested to quit now. I'll be happier once I'm only applying and hunting my home state of Colorado.

I added Alaska to my list yesterday.

AK
AZ
CA
CO
IN
MT
SD
WY

I don't apply in every state every year. I usually put in for something I think I'm likely to draw in 2-3 states each year.

Also do some OTC here in the Midwest.

OR, ID, MT, WY, UT, AK, AZ, CO, NV, TX, and sometimes NM. Some states are just for a couple species, others like AK, WY, ID, AZ I try for almost all species. Then OR, UT, NV I'm all in for everything. I hope to back off on a couple, but I am invested too deep in the point systems and should draw soon. As far as cost, all I can say is probably too much!

I am a little surprised how many of you apply in so many states...mostly western states. No doubt most of that hunting takes place on federal land.

I urge you to contribute to organizations that are working hard to keep our federal lands in public hands. Many organizations are fighting on your behalf against continual attempts to sell our federal lands or otherwise reduce their value to sportsmen.

In Wyoming, some excellent organizations include the Wyoming Wildlife Federation and the Wyoming Outdoor Council. There are many others in Wyoming and in other states.

This thread seemed ripe for a little unscientific statistical compilation, so I started making tally marks. The average person applies to 5 states. Based on this thread, the most popular are:

Wyoming 89 percent
Colorado 59 percent
Utah 56 percent
Arizona 52 percent
New Mexico 33 percent
Nevada 33 percent
Idaho 30 percent
Montana 30 percent
South Dakota 19 percent
Oregon 15 percent

And exactly 0 percent answered the second half of the original question, which was how much money do you spend on your applications?

That's because we don't want to know how much we spend, so we can keep telling our wives "I don't know, but I get almost all of it back!!!"

Should be close:

Arizona - Every year (Desert sheep, elk, deer, antelope, javelina, sheep and turkey). Also building points for my kids

Oregon - Every year (Sheep, mountain goat, elk, deer, antlerless deer, spring bear, premium elk, premium deer, premium antelope)

Montana - Every year (Sheep, mountain goat, antelope)

Colorado - Every year (Sheep, mountain goat, elk, deer, antelope and black bear)

South Dakota - Every year (bison)

Utah - Every year (Desert Sheep, Rocky Mountain Sheep, Mountain Goat, bison, elk, limited entry deer, general deer). Also building points for my kids.

Nevada - Every year (Desert Sheep, California Bighorn, Deer, Elk, Antelope)

Wyoming- Every year (elk, deer, antelope). Moose every other year to not lose my points as one of these years I'll hunt a cow for meat. Also building points for my kids.

New Mexico - No point systems, so if I'm desperate for a quality elk tag. Occasionally for oryx and ibex.

Idaho - No point system, so only occasionally for sheep

We are at the point with preference/bonus points that we pick the tag we want to draw on a given year. We try to limit to one or two out of state tags a year. The others we apply for points only or extreme long shot dream tags.

Several things I apply for I am at or near the top of the point pool, and if I was a new applicant just jumping in I would most likely NOT apply as the odds of drawing would be ridiculously low. An example would be Wyoming moose.

I'm going to ball park it here, depends on how many species and what you draw. Also some of these you have to front the tag fees, I send NM $7600 and get back all but $60 or so if I dont' draw.

Texas - About $100 + another $100 for my license

South Dakota - $20 Antelope and Bison

Montana $200 Moose, Sheep, Goat, Antelope, Deer and Elk

Colorado $80 Sheep, Goat, Deer

Wyoming $150 Goat, Antelope, Deer, Elk

New Mexico $100 Ibex, Oryx, Elk, Antelope, Sheep

Utah - $100 - everything

AZ $200 - Elk, Antelope, sheep, deer

NV - $$180 - everything

So about $1200 a year in non refundable application fees, plus fronting tag fees where necessary. I used to spend a few hundred more on raffle tags but have cut that back to only a handful.

After adding this all up I wish I had not done it! Gross!
