Me and my hunting buddy drew unit 100 bull elk tags and my twin brother really wants to tag along to shoot his first animal. The area we are going to be in is really hard to draw for antelope but he can draw a region W tag and hunt deer area 131. It sounds like deer densities are really low and its a 4 point or better unit. I was wondering if he should get this tag to hunt the 4 days before elk opens (oct15) while we are scouting. He has been out hunting a few times and has been unsuccessful, he really needs a positive experience and was wondering in your opinion what the deer hunting there is like. thanks

Success rate for general is pretty low for Wyoming 12%

License Type Active Hunters Buck Doe Fawn Total Success Hunter Days Harvest Days License Sold
131 Steamboat
Limited 7 38 0 26 7 33 86.8% 132 4 50
General 593 59 12 0 71 12% 1807 25.5

It is really a better antelope unit.

My uncle has ran trail cams out in that area the last couple years. Has pics of some sweet bulls, and hardly any deer.

Now that is some damn good info, looks like he will just have to try for the doe tags for antelope and deer. Thanks guys

Nothing wrong with punching doe tags !
Absolutely not! If he needs some success, then the antelope doe tags are the way to go. Further, if people aren't giving any good info on deer here (or elsewhere), I'd bag the doe deer tags. Just tell him he can help you kill a good bull and you'll give him some steaks for his trouble. Elk is better than deer anyway (but properly taken care of antelope is as good or better than elk).

Another idea is consider the great predator hunting out in that area. Calling coyotes is a blast and they are plentiful out there. Buy a doe antelope tag if you can but bring some camo and a jack rabbit in distress call.

There are several other areas east of the sweetwater river and pretty close to oregon buttes that open oct 15 for 3 point or better muleys.
