I've heard through the grapevine that a group of hunters from my hometown drew area 39 type 9 elk tags. They are up hunting right now and have not seen an elk in the area they usually have good luck in. All they are seeing are wolves. I haven't talked to them directly but its going around town that's what the problem is. Has anyone else heard of elk in the Big Horns yet. I have heard of a few spottings but not the number they are supposedly seeing.

If the squirrel squeezers hadn't filed a lawsuit with a animal loving east coast Judge and stopped the hunt in Wyoming we'd be able to shoot everyone we saw in the Bighorns....they were in the Predator "shoot on sight" zone. I don't know what our legislators are doing about it....but it sure ain't much that's for sure.

Wolves have been in the Bighorns for a long time. That has been confirmed on several occasions. The good news is they typically don't live very long because they get into trouble with livestock. They seem to like Elk Area 38 but will drift over to 39 and close to 40. I saw a lone black wolf in 38 one time and have heard many other reporting the same thing.

I just got back from a 8 day hunt in unit #45 in the Big Horns and the elk were quiet and not showing themselves, I hunted from 9,000 to 10,000 feet over a 20 mile area. Heard a couple bugles saw 2 bulls and 14 cows all in the thick stuff. When I first got there I thought that all the Labor Day traffic had them spooked but I went 2 to 4 miles in and it was the same.

Red, did you see any wolf sign? I haven't ever seen any sign of wolves in 45, but I'm sure occasionally there has been. Heard of ranchers shooting a few near there. Elk can be tough to locate at times. In 45, I would go low if I wasn't finding them where I usually do. I have also seen some really late rutting activity in 45, it's early.

I did not see any kill sites, did not hear any wolves. I did see a significant amount of large tracks along Lily Lake ATV trail I knew they were not yotes at the time I thought they were dogs running with a atv.

I have heard multiple reports of wolves in the Big Horns... That being said, I have never seen evidence of them personally, and I have hiked, fished and hunted from Buffalo south (on both the east and west slopes) for a long time. In regards to Area 45, I have heard the hunting is very slow in this year for whatever reason.

Elk activity has been slow in other parts of Wyoming also. We hunted 7 days in the Snowies and saw only 6 elk and almost no bugles, even at night. The elk were still scattered and only now are bulls starting to gather a harem where we were. Heard of other activity but not much. Maybe this last full moon was the trigger for the cows . The elk we did get into were far from the road.

Wolf Problem in Elk Area 19

I have a few pictures of 2 black wolves in Elk Area 19. What is the status of renewal of a Wyoming wolf hunt???

Were your wolf pic's in 19 taken recently. I know there were two up there a year or two ago that the USF&W were supposedly looking to take care of...

I had a 39-9 tag this year and spent about 12 days in there. Never once saw or heard a wolf. 2 of my friends also had tags in there, one spent a week in there and the other was in there for most of the month and neither of them saw or heard any wolves. None of us had any trouble finding elk or hearing bugles.

They were taken 2 months ago. We had 5 come into a whitetail kill site in Smith Creek in mid September. I would doubt the guy who reported this except he's a wildlife biologist!
