I did my first ever Orange Theory Fitness Class today. Really cool and different. A lot like CrossFit but more about heart rate than quick times, sets, and reps. Anyone else tried Orange Theory? I've been going to the gym 3 nights a week lifting and doing cardio. Thought I would mix it up today. Might have to sign up and cancel my gym membership.

I am biased because I work in the industry for another chain, but like anything else in fitness, it is good for a change of pace to break the monotony and avoid plateaus. Not a long term solution in my opinion. The franchises are making a ton of money off the concept though!

Me, I just knocked out a total body workout and an hour and a half horseback ride for first time in 15 years.
Walking lunges 50 lbs
Push ups with rotation
Lunge jumps
Rows
Deadlifts
Upright rows
Battle ropes
Abs
Bring on the mountain!

if you look at the link I posted you can see the whole ride, scroll in, out. it shows it on a shaded topo map.

no I don't hunt there, first time ever being there. I try to ride an area every summer, that is listed as proposed wilderness. Bicycles are not allowed in wilderness, so I ride them while they are still legal.

Traveling all of last week, thus the hotel gyms suck. However, I did get in some hiking on 2 different days and saw some nice deer.
Back in the saddle tonight.

Stairs are a great exercise. I love doing them every couple of weeks, especially with a pack.

Monday: Ran 4 miles @ 32:20 on 2%incline. (41yr - 5'9" - 185lb) Started back slow after a week off; however, my body probably needed the break.
Getting ready for the big push as I leave for archery elk hunt in 25 days!

I had plans for a couple of big rides this weekend. Forest fire closures have stopped me from doing them this weekend. Powerwashing the deck and restaining are on the schedule now.

Friday: Elevation run consisting of 8 miles.
Saturday: Cut 3.5 cords of wood. Red Elm that was already down and easier to cut and load; but still work after 2.5 hours of cut & load and another hour stacking. I'm officially done gathering winter firewood. Anything else this year is bonus.

I keep thinking I will get a race report worked up for the Elkhorn 52K race that I ran back on August 1st, but I keep not getting it done. It was exponentially harder than I anticipated. I had run a flat 50 miler in 9 1/2 hours back in April and ran a flat 36 miler in 6 hours in June so I thought I would be able to finish it in 7 1/2 or 8 hours tops.

My official time ended up being 10 hours 46 minutes and 36 seconds! An average pace of over 19 minutes per mile! It was hot (97 degrees that day in Helena, unofficially 93 degrees at the start/finish line), but I just wasn't prepared for the elevation gain and loss. At mile 12 after a drop of 1,500' in just over 2 miles my quads pretty much exploded. I started cramping leaving that aid station and still had 21 miles to go. I finished but I'm not sure I ran more than 2 or 3 miles of the last 21 miles. I had muscles cramping that I didn't even know existed by the end.

I still find it hard to comprehend that I can ended up going that slow. The trails were pretty technical in spots and my GPS ended up showing 8,250' of elevation gain/loss, but still I would have thought I could have walked the entire course faster than I ended up finishing and I was trying my hardest.

I think this link should work if you want to check out the route and some pictures I took during the race. I have the settings to public on this workout so let me know if you can't see it.

I got in some hiking later that week and have been trying to get back to running, but only logged 20 miles the week before and 22 miles last week.

I still haven't decided if I am going to try to redeem myself and do another mountain trail race or if I just need to stick to hiking in the mountains during hunting season and running in the flat lands during the rest of the year.

Oh well, good to see everyone still getting it done. Hunting season is right around the corner so don't slack off now!

Things have been really busy around here, but I have still been getting a couple workouts a week in. Deadlifts were part of it last night and I am feeling it today.
