To go along with the thread about ammo in the Lightweight Forum lets find out how many shots you take at a animal.

Just a average will do.

I say 2 would be a average. Normally 1 does the job but I will always give’m another if I can. Elk I will keep shooting till they are down.

very seldom ,more then 1.

if first shot does not drop it immediately, 2.

worst case ever, 4. that was as a young, excitable ,hunter .
actually there was one incident where I shot 10 times ,using wrong (25-06 through a .270)bullets that ,I ALMOST MANAGED TO WIPE FROM MY MEMORY .(WITHOUT A DOUBT, dumbest thing I ever did)
nowadays all my efforts revolve around ,one shot ,one kill, mentality.

Your not the only one who has done that kind of stuff! Our Rifle Pistol Club has hunter sight in days prior to each of the 4 rifle seasons and our range is open to the public. We have Range Officers there to assist as necessary. I have seen many guys using 25-06 in 270s, 270s in 30-06 and even 243 in 308. Just couldn't figure why the bullets where tumbling and/or never hitting the paper! LOL

I had a friend that went down to a sporting goods dealer to pick up some 300 Win mag shells before the local elk hunt. He brought the box of them out on the hunt and loaded them into his open shell carrier. I looked at them and asked him when he bought a 300 H&H? He said that he hadn't and I told him that he better look at his shells.

Someone had switched them at the store and he never did really look at them when he put them into the carrier.

I have another friend that killed a cow elk with some 7mm Weatherby mag rounds that he shot out of his 300 Weatherby mag. Same scenario, someone had switched them at the store. But that 7mm bullet managed to find its mark when he pulled the trigger.

Mostly one as I mostly hunt deer and predators. We have put several into an elk before, the first would have done the job but he was still headed toward a canyon we didn't want him getting into. I have put 2 or 3 into a coyote also when using the 223 or 204 and the first hit is a little far back and gets them spinning. I'd much rather take extra shots that might be unnecessary than let an animal suffer in case the first hit wasn't as good as I thought.

funny how accuracy declines in such situations.

As long as it is a smaller caliber being fired out of a case of the same dimensions except for the bullet everything will be fine except for the bullet bouncing around in the barrel.

But if you try to fire a 30-06 in a 270, or a 270 in a 25-06 you are going to have problems.

It would be quite a chore to get some of the bigger bullets into the smaller chambers on a rifle that is in good condition. But one that isn't headspacing correctly or has a chamber problem it might be possible.

I have only shot a couple handfuls of Big Game animals with a rifle. Almost all of them died with 1 shot.

For self preservation, and the lack of wanting to get mauled, I shot my PA black bear twice with my 300 WSM....

I did have quite the shooting spree at my mule deer in 2016 with my muzzleloader though.... for the record I hit the deer with ever shot.
