I would think you'd want it to range that far. Have you ever thought of using it to help plan your stalk? Say you range the buck at 800, then you can range a rock or a tree at 500 for example... that way you can set yourself up for a 300 yard shot.

Agreed, the farther you can range with a range finder the better. Yes, I have been in that type of situation needing to cut the distance in order for a good shot, and never been disapointed with my rangefinder. Sure, I know there are better ones out there and the day my Nikon lets me down I'll upgrade, but until then I'm content with it. Sorry I got off topic as to which range finder is best, I was mostly just curious if anyone else out there was using Nikons.

I have a leica rangemaster 1200(small, clear, bright red readout, fast) I also have a bushnell bowhunter, "chuck adams edition" (slow, hard to read black readout, doesn't work in low light conditions, sometimes doesn't work in bright conditions...garbage.)

I got tired of carrying 2 pieces of optics, eg. binos & rangefinder. Bought a Swarovski combo that is a 1500 yd rf and an 8x monocular. It is fantastic, best optics I have ever owned and I only carry it, nothing more.

so when I posted on this thread origanly I talked up the lieca 900 since then it broke! I tried to contact leica to send it in and get it fixed they said sorry can't fix it but we will sell you our new model at a discount. I wasn't to happy with that response I feel like they should back and repair their product. never-the-less buying the newer model at a discount was better than trying a different brand so take that for what it is worth. I now have the leica crf 1600 got it a week ago and so far so good, hopefully it lasts longer than my last one (5 yrs).

Such a young optic device...too bad they cant fix it. But at least a discount on the nicer one.
Thanks for the feedback on their customer service level too!

I'd highly recommend going to the store and handling as many as you can.

I remember years ago thinking the vortex or leica I may splurge on, and when I handled them are I ended up with the Leuopld.

I was looking at the Vortex Range and was hoping someone has used it before and could speak on the accuracy and quality of it? I found one solid review, https://outdooropticshq.com/best-rangefinder-hunting-reviews/ but would appreciate some field experience on using the vortex.
I have a Vortex. During the off season a few years ago I gave a friend my Nikon. It worked great for anything in the 200-800 range but did not have the angle compensation. The Vortex works alright but struggles to acquire targets at long range sometimes and in bright conditions the readout can be hard to see.

At some point I will probably try to get a pair of range finding binos if someone comes out with a set I can afford but until then I will run the Vortex.

I've had the Leica crf 1600 for about 5 years. It has performed as advertised up until recently this past season. It is on its way back to Leica CS. Seems like a seal or something died. Image became cloudy / dim and it would not give ranges on deer out beyond about 350-400 yards. As far as the small / compact size range finders class, I still think Leica is at least one of the best. These are light wt electronic devices exposed to some fairly tough conditions (wet, cold, hot, dust, impacts, etc.).
Not sure if the Sig range finders have been on the market long enough to really know about their performance and durability. I have read very positive reviews along with some not so positive reviews.

I've had a Leica LRF 800 for many years. Ranges out to 800+ yards and the optics are excellent (actually carried it instead of my binos for a few years).

Rock solid performance. Discontinued, but you can pick them up on ebay for around $175.

I have a Sig Kilo 2000 Rangefinder. Its a marvelous instrument.
I have been overly impressed with mine!, I got the version just under this one but my buddy has the 2000 and I think they are outstanding! I'm actually surprised you were the first to mention them,.

never owned one . always figured if you worked to get close they were not necessary and just one more thing to carry.
