Not diving into brands. Just wondering what magnification you guys use for western style hunting.

Here is what I use:

Elk rifle (.300 Wby)- 4x14; deer/antelope rifle (25-06)-4x14; deer/elk (30-06)- 3 1/2 x 10; varmints (.220 Ackley Improved Swift)- 6x18; varmints (.17HMR)- 3-9.
All scopes except the 3x9 on the .17, have ballistic turrets. Every scope is the same brand and has the small objective lens (30 mm I think).

One other thing I'll bet most of you don't have....all my scopes have dot reticles.

I have a 2-7 power on my rifle and since I am not a long range shooter it is plenty for me, 400 yards is a long shot for me.

I start with wanting the low end magnification to be around 3 power in order to take a close quick shot if I need to. The last thing you want is a 30 yard shot and not being able to find the animal in the scope. I had a 4.5 at one point and it was a tiny bit much for me. Respecting that, I like as much magnification as I can get on the high end and 5X and 6X multipliers are becoming more and more common. I now hunt with 3-15 and will soon be using a 3-18 on my primary hunting rifle.

I have a 4-12X40 on my 300 WSM. I like the fine duplex.

Interesting results so far across the board.

Most of my hunting scopes are 2-7x33 or 3-9x40. 15+ years old or more. Last scope I bought was 4-16x44, 3 years ago. 98.23% of the time they all stay on 5x ish. I’m good to 400 at 5x. I like a smaller scope profile, and do like the 4x, 5x, 6x, ... multipliers. So future acquisitions are likely to be 4-16, 3-15 and the like with no more than a 44 objective lens.

I have 3 primary scopes:

Leica ER 2.5-10x42
Redfield Illuminator 3.5-12x50 or 56
Leupold VX-2 3-9x40

My favorite is the 2.5-10. I did shoot an antelope at 340 yards with the 3-9 this year tho...

I purchased my very first variable scope for my .280 AI I had built two years ago. The scope I got is a.........................
4.5-14x40mm. It has the B&C reticle. I really like that scope.

My other two big-game rifles have a 4x and a 6x with the duplex crosshair. Good solid scopes! I've never felt I was short changing myself with a fixed power scope.
