This weekend should be great for deer & elk hunters here in SW Colorado. We have snow now at the higher altitudes and rain at lower elevations. I have heard that the elk are starting to move around more now that the hot weather has left. Those that have first season tags should be prepared for stormy weather thru Sunday as we have a weather alert issued.

Good Luck.

Colorado threw me a curve also with the season dates. I'm still thinking 10 years ago.

No hunt going on this weekend, but the second season starts on the 26th.

  • Archery: September 2–30
  • Muzzleloader: September 14–22
  • First rifle season: October 12–16
  • Second rifle season: October 26–November 3
  • Third rifle season: November 9–15
  • Fourth rifle season: November 20–24

I always associated it with the opening of Utah's general deer season and since the opened at the same time I never got to hunt Colorado's 2nd season. I also had a hard time getting it off since a more senior employee also hunted 2nd season but we got it all worked out.

But this gap between seasons has me all screwed up but it makes for a lot better 4th season deer hunters. It is almost like one of the commissioners that sit on Colorado's board wanted a 4th season deer tag for a better chance at a wall hanger so he talked his buddies into changing it for the 5 years season structure for when he would draw.

It will be interesting if they keep them this way when the season structure comes back up.

It's funny how when the plan changes it messes with us so much. Checking regulations has become second nature to me with a few season splits that have started to happen around here for deer.

It's been raining here for most of the night.

Looking at radar I need to put another pot of coffee on.

The elk and deer hunters will be getting wet for the next couple of days,

Yesterday we had a steady downpour of rain for a few hours as the above radar map shows. I have no idea of just how much rain we got but it was substantial, the hills also got a good covering of snow down to about 7500 feet.

Well, this morning we have snow here at 6500 feet and I am sure that the hills are getting their fair share.

Hunters have to be loving it, I know that if I was out there I'd be rubbing my hands together over the roaring fire waiting for the sun to poke out.
