What methods are people using to keep their expensive cameras from being stolen? I'm looking for the cheapest option that is still effective.

I lag bolt a heavy duty steel box to a good sized tree trunk and padlock it. Several people have found it but none have given me any trouble.

If they cant steal it they will destroy it! They get 50% of mine on public land. It almost seems as though they think I put them there for them!

write a little note on your camera that your are being watched by my other trail cam a few yards away right now so if you take this one i will find you.
I refuse to place them with a high probability for theft... I recently found a nice looking piece of public ground and wanted to put a camera out so I thought I would ask for ideas. Elk- did you make your box or buy it? Can you post a photo?

It is a pain but I have placed them several feet in the air.
Takes about six screw in steps that I used to use for tree stand hunting.
I screw them out when I leave. It goes pretty quick on follow-up visits.
I guess if they wanted to come back they could get it easy enough.
I haven't lost one yet.
I have also cabled them with a small steel box using a cable that takes bolt cutters to cut.
Pretty sad that you have to go to those ends.

I put them in a security box, which I lock, and then lock it to the tree with a python cable masterlock.

tried that once with a camera 20 ft up watching a decoy camera that didn't work. they got em both not even a trace of sign left behind
I had a cpl stolen a few years ago, but it was on private and whoever stole them walked about 2 miles barefoot down a muddy road, snake infested road. I chalked it up to being a methmonkey from around the lake. I don't worry about the ones I put on public here getting stolen, water damage is more of a concern bc the river bottom can go from bone dry to 10' under water overnight.

I've never had a problem around here but feel lucky as I have caught several people on them and none took the camera.
It' really amazing how bad people who use public lands seem to act. Between going off road illegally, dumping trash/appliances/etc, poaching, and stealing cameras and tree stands it's a wonder we still have public land to use.
