Time for new hunting pants

Need new pants for deer and turkey hunting.

My "go-to" are old camo / cotton 6 pocket BDU type pants. Years ago my Mom sewed shoelaces in the bottoms, so I can cinch them down over my boots. They are roomy, comfy, and have been patched more than a few times.

Here is what I deer/turkey hunt in now:
  • Camo / cotton 6 pocket BDU's (above) the go-to
  • Cabela's Gore-Tex Cordura upland pants (4 pocket) colder days
  • Cabela's MTO50 Gore-Tex rain pants (rear pockets only) over the BDU's on wet days
  • Cabela's Gore-Tex silent suede bibs (3 pocket) over the BDU's on wet days
  • Cabela's Dry-Plus Thinsulate Bibs (4 pocket) over fleece waterfowl pants for SOUPER cold days

Priorities:
  1. Comfort and fit
  2. Pockets
  3. Drawstrings on bottom (over boots)
  4. Breathability (I sweat easily)
  5. Waterproof (optional...can always toss the Gore-Tex over)

Sitka, Kuiu, Browning, Kryptek, other? Give me some thoughts. I have no problem ordering up several different brands, trying them on at home, then shipping back the one's I don't like.

Thanks, Daubs

Looks like you are looking at all camo type chlothing? If you don't mind hunting in some brown, green or tan color pants, KUHL makes some nice pants. Not a lot of hunters seem to use them, but they are pretty nice. I picked up a pair of the Radikl model pants that are slightly too big so I can fit a pair of long johns under them. The Renegades are their nylon and spandex mix pants. They are worth a look even if they are just for kicking around camp.

Work2hunt: I'm okay spending good money for quality gear. Kuiu Attack pants have my attention right now. Also looking at Kryptek and Sitka.

The Kuiu Attacks, have been a great choice for me. They are not waterproof though. I use a thin pair of rain pants over them if needed. My wife bought me some Yukon's for Christmas, they feel good, but I haven't really tested them too hard yet.

I have beat the tar out of Timberline and Mountain pants from Sitka, both are good for a variety of places.

Kryptek's Valhalla pants are another good option. Just wore them scouting last week in Western Wyo.

I have the kuiu attacks and prana stretch zion. The Kuiu are a tad thicker than the prana and a little more of a roomy cut on me. I like the prana for the price and the integrated "belt". I have brown in both, but if you have to have camo prana may be out. Both are water resistant for a bit, but definitely not waterproof. The prana dries faster than the kuiu.

Kuiu Attack pants are one of my favorite hunting products ever. Everyone I have gotten on to them has loved them! I haven't worn rain pants since using them and I live in Western Oregon.

tdcour, which Prana pants do you have? I have wanted to give a pair a try for wearing anytime.

When it's not cold, I really like my Sitka 90% pants for deer hunting, super comfortable. Just bought a pair of timberline pants, the waterproof seat made it nice for turkey season.
I'm normally a sweat pants under bibs kind of guy for deer hunting though..

I wear hand-me-down wranglers, with long johns when its cold...sometime I feel like a young old-timer.

I carry packable Cabelas outerwear on the 4 wheeler just in case, and I have some insulated Cabelas snow pants that don't get used unless it's a late season hunt and snowing hard.

When I'm deer hunting- especially in an enclosed stand, I wear my own Wranglers and a camo shirt- maybe. If the wind is played right and good hunting/ scent discipline is exercised- all good.

However my opinion is significantly different if bow hunting or back country hunting for both concealment and performance. Wool still works as well as any synthetic performance gear and breaths without zippers or vents. It also maintains @ 80% of core heat value even when wet. Although in frigid temperatures for extended periods of time in back country, I want 98-100% of my core temperature .

Color blind or not our game has the advantage and extra concealment through a break up pattern works regardless of what someone says otherwise- especially in bow range. I've been busted too many times doing everything right only to get popped because of a creak in gear or at draw back. Then I'm forced to wait them out- if they don't bolt first.

Did that once at about 3/4 draw holding all 72# sitting for about a minute, once. Things got interesting when I started to quiver a bit from fatigue. Got the shot off through.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm probably going to go with Kuiu attack pants. I like to walk a lot, spot and stalk. Can't stand sitting in a tree stand. Probably the Verde 2.0, but thinking about Vias. Current pants are realtree hardwoods (gray-ish), and tops more of Adv. Woodlands (green-ish). Sandhills of Nebraska...thoughts on pattern?
