Survival equipment

Sorry if I'm dredging up an old dialog.......
The GPS thread got me thinking about other equipment I carry.
I found a thread from last year discussing spot and epirbs, but I couldn't find a thread discussing survival related equipment that folks are carrying.
Admittedly I am probably overdoing it. A lot of that comes from my line of work but some comes from comprise for the sake of being allowed to take off for multiple days on my own.

As I said on the other thread I always carry a primary and back up GPS
In addition I carry a Mccmurdo Fastfind GPS, personal 406mhz epirb (nice because it transmits location as well as distress signal). Rounding out the minimum pack contents are Batteries, Magnesium fire starter, whistle, mirror, strobe, water treatment pills, and three small flashlights. I don't put all the items in one kit but If I did they would come in at about 16oz and fit in a pouch 4x4, 3 inches thick.

I don't carry a snake bit kit or first aid kit for that matter, (a roll of med tape a few bandaids and a gauze pad are always in the pack) for something bleeding badly I'd sacrifice a game bag or shirt.

I always carry a good space blanket. They work well for an emergency shelter too. I have been through a few unexpected rain and snow storms under one. That and a fire kit are the most important survival items to me. I always carry 2 lights too. Spent the night on the side of a mountain once when my headlamp went out. Got a fire going and spent a very long night by it, but atleast I was warm!

Ditto Oregon Jim, my kit is comparable to yours, I also carry fish hooks, line, rope amonng other things. I often think I pack to heavy and will never need some of these things but I hate take them out because the next trip I'll find myself needing them.

I will always bring a backup light and batteries, rain gear, something to start a fire, something to stop bleeding, and rope/paracord. These things I'm most likely to need IMO. ------>And toilet paper.<-----

I usually have some sort of extra food packed too.

Does anyone bring the blood clotting packets? I see them and always think it would be a good idea but have never bought em.

I was thinking the same thing. I have thought about buying one but always forget.
Yeah, my old man is on blood thinners and I always get nervous when we are out in the hills so far from help. Now that this thread got me thinking about it again I am going to pick some up next time I see them.

I don't even think of cord as a survival item but it obviously is (and I carry several feet).
Never even occurred to me to carry a blood clotting agent.

I think the space blanket should be on everyone's list... spend one cold wet night on a mountain that you didn't plan on and you would wish you had it.

This is def a great thread. I don't know why I wasn't thinking about what I would need for survival situations. I have already put a call in to one of my buddies that works EMS to see what I can get from his agency lol

I have a blood clotting bandage I carry. They are supposed to work very good but I have never actually used one. The army issued it to me. I carry a standard army field bandage too. I always carry sports tape too, you can fix anything with it:)

My emergency kit is small containing an extra light, Streamlight Protac 1L, whistle, mirror, hand saw, matches and fire starter. I also carry a space blanket, blood clot packet, and coban to help wrap things up tight, and I have enough 550 cord to help.

I haven't used the clot packet but have need the blood clot spray after having a severe head injury and the bleeding stopped right away. I don't believe the clot pack will work that well; however, I'm not going to carry the spray can.

Your on target with the space blankets once your really think about , they are made so small and light now their is really no reason not to carry a couple and if you have to spend the night in the elements unexpectedly they could make all the difference. I am going to throw an extra one in my pack now !

Matches, metal match fire starter, Esbit fuel tablets (for starting a fire in the rain), water purification tablets, knife, Gerber, flashlight, EPIRB, signal mirror.

First aid kit has band aids, couple of big bandages, quick clot sport pack (will replace with the bandage eventually), neosporin, tourniquette.

I need to get a whistle, I keep forgetting to get one.
