Now there is a deadspot under the spine. Father inlaw got a pass-thru on a buck that jumped string. Saw him on camera a few weeks later healing up.

My question would be if that deer was hit where that hole is, it should have been down and able to be shot again before the shock wore off and it could get up and away. If you look at the carcass that WB put up, there is meat between the bottom of the spine to above about the 7th rib that can be hit and result in an animal getting away to recover, especially with an arrow that doesn't shock like a bullet does. A little higher and you're into the spine for a knockdown where they can't get up. A tad lower and you're into the heart/lung area just forward of the paunch, which should result in a dead animal pretty quick if it's a double lunger. If it's a one lung hit, especailly on an elk, they can go a long ways and be hard to recover.

Most people with a bow, shoot over the spine and think they dbl lunged them. There's an inch of hair above that back. The lungs are attached to the entire chest cavity by a thin layer of fluid, similar to how plastic wrap sticks to a wet surface. With no air between the membranes around the lungs and cavity wall, and a vacuum in the cavity, there ain't no void.

I hit a deer with my ML right bellow his spine just behind the shoulder (very close to this supposid dead spot) and it took out his spine and both lungs and he never even kicked (well not that I could see after the smoke cleared anyways:D).

Bullet shock is a bit more helpful than a 400 grain arrow zipping through a little further back...

* Nice harvest Musket Man!

No way this is a real pic. We all know how high the lungs are in the body cavity, it's just hard to picture them because we only
see them when the deer is upside down while we clean them out. So much tissue damage, broken ribs on both sides poking into the lungs. One really strange thing is there is no evidence of blood.

I cant believe this thread has gotten 4 pages! We call this area the holler in the south. Yes I have put a couple arrows through this area and have never found the deer. I don't know if the pic is real or not but its too close 2 season 2 argue about! Just remember 2 aim low so we don't have 2 argue this subject anymore! Good luck to all you guys in sept and beyond!

these animals are pretty damn strong, 3 years ago my buddy shot a 5x bull and lost blood trail. the next year he and another buddy were hunting back in there and he shot a 6x6, while dressing him we found 5" of an arrow shaft with Brodhead that was in the front shoulder. it was his arrow shaft from the year before. we knew it was his because of his wraps he uses at bottom of shaft. I was dumbfounded, the entrance wound was healed up but scar tissue was crazy.
