I haven't bought merino wool for layering yet. what would be the best for a base layer? Have I been missing out on the benefits of merino wool?
I just found out about it myself thanks to this website. It's like the best of all worlds - it's wool, so it will keep you warm when it's wet, but it feels silky smooth and it's stretchy like polypro, without the stink.
I used to have one of the military wool sweaters with the button collar, the merino feels nothing like that at all - no itch.
As far as weight for a base layer, they have several different weights, so it depends on personal preference and where you will be.
I'm replacing the military issue cotton long johns that I've been using with midweight wool pants and lightweight t-shirts. I move alot and I always have heavyweight polypro long underwear with me in case it gets really cold.
