thanks a ton, jmsz. I just ordered complete merino sets for my dad and myself. I've been wanting some for a awhile, and it will make a great father's day gift also. Saved a pile of money compared to what I had been looking at. Thanks again!

No problem. If you're going to be looking for other stuff, get on their mailing list, that's where I got the code from. I was actually looking at the pants and was going to use a code I already had and this one showed up in my email with a better deal.

I haven't bought merino wool for layering yet. what would be the best for a base layer? Have I been missing out on the benefits of merino wool?
I just found out about it myself thanks to this website. It's like the best of all worlds - it's wool, so it will keep you warm when it's wet, but it feels silky smooth and it's stretchy like polypro, without the stink.

I used to have one of the military wool sweaters with the button collar, the merino feels nothing like that at all - no itch.

As far as weight for a base layer, they have several different weights, so it depends on personal preference and where you will be.

I'm replacing the military issue cotton long johns that I've been using with midweight wool pants and lightweight t-shirts. I move alot and I always have heavyweight polypro long underwear with me in case it gets really cold.

Merino wool wicks sweat away to other layers, cotton absorbs and keeps it on your skin. You'll usually notice the difference on your feet first. What you plan on doing depends on what the best base layer would be. Really active you want to stay away from hvy for the first layer. Have no intention of busting a sweat, go hvy.

Thanks JMSZ, it looks like that discount code applies to a lot of the stuff on Sierra Trading Post.

Lots of good aspects on Merino Wool. A couple of sites, Firstlite and Icebreaker that discuss it and I'll add links below. I don't think I'll ever go back to another base layer other than Merino Wool.

Basically the short version, no stink, firesafe, soft no itch different than folks think of typical wool, good performance qualities, lightweight high warmth to weight ratio. There is a lot better detail on the below links. Icebreaker has a few video clips on the benefits of it that I thought were well done. :)
