Im planning on hunting a whole new area this year for archery mule deer and rifle if I draw the rifle tag. My question is I live in south Dakota and the deer don't travel a long ways in the winter to better ground. The place I will be hunting has a couple ranches around the area so when the winter was tough they were near the ranches feeding on bales and other things. I was thinking of going in there to look for sheds and get a better idea of the country I will be hunting. My question is should I be staying out of there for shed hunting and just scout the place in late summer or don't you think it will bother the deer from moving out of the area much? Its about a 7000 acre area I can hunt. What are your thoughts?

For that specific scenario. I'd say yes. That's very similar to my farm here at 6300 ft with regards to limited animal movement for a winter migration per say. I'd be poking around in there if it was me.

Act like a rancher and not a hunter. The farm/ranch country deer are very used to people. I would drive a 4 wheeler or UTV around if you can- they see them all summer long.

That would be ideal but I have to walk everything, which is fine cause its a huge area and will keep most people out where I will be hunting. Hopefully I can find some mulie sheds, have never really found many mulie sheds.

This will be our first year of archery hunting public land in South Dakota. We have picked areas that we can be in with our horses over the summer to scout and learn the lay of the land, but will hunt without them. We found a pile of mule deer sheds in Wyoming, but never one in SD.

We also got our first turkey tags. Gonna bring the horses west and ride around looking for turkeys. Low odds deal, but hunting is hunting. :D

Good luck! We are shed hunting today with the kids.

My wife and i both drew turkey tags this year. First time i have ever applied. Just have never been into turkey hunting, mostly big game. Looking for sheds on horse would be fun. Good luck shed hunting and enjoy your time with the kids!!!

Well, no sheds, but my eight year old found a nine point deadhead.

When we got home we moved our furthest target to 50 yards. We did pretty good for our first time at that distance. I will be glad when my setup is complete and set for good. Been changing so much it's hard to get used to any one setting.

I just read the law- CODAK is correct.

"41:03:01:05. Destruction or removal of natural or cultural features prohibited — Exception. A person may not destroy, damage, or remove a living or dead tree, shrub, or vegetation; disturb any earth, rocks, minerals, natural formations, or cultural resources; or destroy, damage, or remove any antlers, skulls, or other parts of animal carcass located on lands owned or leased by the department without written permission from the secretary or a designated agent. However, a person participating in religious activities in Bear Butte State Park or on department land owned or leased adjacent to the Missouri River may use grasses and forbs taken from these lands for ceremonial purposes. For purposes of this rule, a cultural resource includes historic properties, archaeological resources, and Native American cultural items (including human remains, associated funerary objects, unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, as defined in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990, 25 U.S.C. ? 3001, as amended through February 2, 2009)."

It depends on how you or they interpret what I have in red. It is my interpretation that shed antlers are not part of a carcass.

Now a dead head and antlers would be prohibited.

They send out an email to residents every spring reminding people of the law that you cannot take anything from public lands. I know several people who have gotten ticketed for it. Sucks but a law is a law...
