I'd put a vortex diamondback scope on it. I think they are about $200. Same no fault warranty as their spotting scopes.

Leupold is hard to beat. VX ii to VX 7 on my guns. I have a Swarovski z5 that I like really well. I don't have a Z3 but I would look at that for a high end and a Leupold vx2 on the lower end. One vx2 I have I bought in the early 70s and Leupold warranty is probably the best and quickest of all.

I was in nearly the same exact spot as you a few years ago. I bought a rifle for my daughter that had a junk scope on it and was a Leupold only guy. I decided to try the Vortex Diamondback 3X9 when it came time to buy, I haven't had any issue with the scope yet. I have had issues with my Diamond back bino's however, I sent them back for repair with no issue but they are doing the same thing again. Sending them back again now that hunting is over, I wont buy vortex diamond back binoculars again.

I too am a Leupold lover. I have 7 of them...6 are VXIIIs and one is a Compac on my .17 HMR. I especially like the 4x14, have 3 of them. Their warranty and customer service cannot be beat!

I guess it's like the old saying goes........ if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm going to stick with what I know. I know it will work for him for a long, long time. If he ever decides he doesn't like the Leupold and wants to change it, I'll get the scope back and upgrade one of my older ones. I appreciate all of the input, guys. Thank you.

I agree. I put a Leupold on my pre-64 Model 70 and it works great.

Hard to go wrong with a Leupold VX-II on it. I also like the Ziess Terra scopes alot from what I have seen. I have been really thinking about getting 1 for my 270 but having trouble taking the VX-II off of it that has been so reliable over the years. I think the new Redfield scopes are a good scope for the money if you are on a budget. I always hear good things about Vortex but I have no experience with them.

So which Leupold will you choose?
Magnification range?
Reticle?

I have a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50mm on my 30-06. It really works well. It's crystal clear even in low light. I like being able to turn it up to 14x although to be honest I rarely need that. A 3.5-10x would also work well. I haven't tried their new VX6's ... too expensive for me.

I went with the Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm. It's a great little all around scope. Fairly priced and great quality. And if he decides he doesn't like it Ive got an old pre 64 mdl 70 in .308 that it'll look real nice on!!!

I have a duplex reticle VXII 3x9x40 on that pre 64 Model 70 30-06, a VXI of the same style and magnification on my Ruger M77 25-06, but went to a VXI 4x12x40 on my Sako .243 so I can use it not only for pronghorns, but also load it down with 58 grain Hornady VMaxs for shots out a ways on pdogs where the higher magnification comes in handy.
