Let's say that your son was going to be getting a rifle for Christmas..... A Ruger M77 in 30.06.....Handed down to him from Grampa.... Say it has an old Bushnell 4x scope on it that has seen better days. If you were going to look at putting a new scope on it, for Christmas, what would you look at. I'm a died-in-the-wool Leupold guy myself, but I love my Vortex spotter and Zeiss binos. Of course $$ is an object, especially since his interest in hunting isn't as strong as his interest in girls(GASP!). I'd like to see something on there that would be useful to him without breaking the bank.

I'm not going to mention a brand because I'm kinda partial.. But if your getting a free gun. Drop some coin on scope! the expensive part is done. Get him something he will grow into. Eventually he will be married and the girls won't be an issue. Let the guy have a solid piece of gear he doesn't have to think about.

I'm really beginning to like the Vortex optics as well! Great glass and not near the price of some of the others. I believe I have an HST on my rifle. It's my favorite scope, but maybe it's because I took out a Desert ram with it! 
On a serious note all the Vortex optics I've had my hands on have been very impressive. About as good of a warranty as you can ask for as well!

I'm also a Leupold guy like the OP and I'd say go with one at the price range you're comfortable with paying and don't look back!

I am looking hard at the vortex for my next scope for a 6.8 spc on a AR. But to many choices for a 300yd gun. My 7mm has a Leupold vx3 on it and I love it. So I'm torn

Hard to go wrong with a Leupold VX-II on it. I also like the Ziess Terra scopes alot from what I have seen. I have been really thinking about getting 1 for my 270 but having trouble taking the VX-II off of it that has been so reliable over the years. I think the new Redfield scopes are a good scope for the money if you are on a budget. I always hear good things about Vortex but I have no experience with them.

If it is an older rifle, I would go with something that looks like it belongs on it. Glossy scopes always look good on "vintage" sticks. A gloss Leupy VX-3 or FX-3 would be great, but don't overlook Sightron SII Big Sky scopes, some models are available in Gloss, and optically they are very good.
Vortex scopes offer tons of value, and I have several of them myself. They are a great option if getting the most performance for your dollar.
Meopta Meopro riflescopes are optically stellar and reasonably priced as well.

I am also a Leupold lover. However if we are talking $200 budget I would look at the Redfield scopes. They were bought out by Leupold a few years ago so all manufactured by the same company. I own one and really like it. However, if you have the money go with higher end Leupold or Vortex.

My vx-3 is a 4.5-14-50. Looking at the 2.5x10x44 vortex for the 6.8

I'm all for supporting companies that make their products in the good old USA like Leupold. I've had my VXII since 1979 and never a problem.
FYI- Redwing boots are still made in America

I would have qualms about putting a Nikon on an '06. Cameraland has the 3 x 9 buckmaster bdc for 159 right now. Not on the web, call only.
