Thats not much different than banking imho...Its glorified line cutting and takes away from the person who has been saving up to draw the tag and it's a system that is ripe for abuse. Wyoming as a great example of that.... people are using points of others to hunt the same unit year after year after year. One guy in particular hunted Region G like 8 years in a row by working that little scheme.... How is that fair?I see no problem with someone with a lot of points helping someone with lesser points draw a unit as a group. But once again you use your points and you loose your points.
Cool in concept, but might create a lot of disruption at the bottom end of things. All point banking will do is to compound the problem of point creep instead of moving the applicants through the system. If I hadn't used all my points for both deer and elk a few years ago I would have over 20 points for each right now. I see no problem in drawing a lesser hunt with 10 points but there is something wrong with me being able to draw that hunt with 10 points and then being able to put in for that same hunt the next year and drawing it again. Points should be use them and they are gone.
I would however like to see point averaging. I see no problem with someone with a lot of points helping someone with lesser points draw a unit as a group. But once again you use your points and you loose your points.
No it actually makes sense now, I guess everyone has their own idea of what they prefer I guess...... I'm not so sure about either one personally.Point banking is only using the amount of points that is needed to draw a tag for a unit that you have more than enough to draw that tag.
So let's say that you have 20 points and you find a unit that you want to hunt that the max points is only 5 points. You put in for that unit and when you draw it they only subtract 5 points from your 20 leaving you with 15 points in the bank.
So if you decided to use your points for that same unit the next year then you spend 5 points to draw the tag leaving you with 10 in the bank.
Those are a couple of extremes as far as what you might have and what unit that you might want to draw.
Now for point averaging, lets say that you have 20 points, Joe your buddy only has 2 points and you decide to put in for a unit that requires 10 points to draw. You take your 20 points and add Joe's 2 points for 22 points then average it down to 11 points for the both of you. So while you could of drawn that unit on your own you helped Joe by 8 or 9 years of points getting him all the way up to 11 points.
Now to throw a real wrench into that lets say that they allow point banking and point averaging, depending on how they would set that up you would only use 9 of your points to drop your total down to 1 point in the bank and since Joe used up all 2 of his points and 9 of yours he would drop back to 0.
Are you totally confused now?
Thank you Winchester. 2006 was my first guided elk hunt in CO. I hunted in unit 43, and also had a deer tag.Yeah, Colorado had Point Banking back in 2006, but it was only implemented for 1 year.
