Pig Snare Questions?

I'm very new to hunting but will be shooting and processing a few wild pigs soon. Thanks to everyone who's responded to my two previous posts.

We live in an area where feral pigs are rather numerous, to the extent where we fenced the area where we live to keep the pigs from digging up the lawn, garden beds, etc.

Adjacent to the property is forest and I'm hoping to snare a few pigs.

What are the opinions regarding the most idiot proof / effective snares I might set up/make? Any links or direction on set up/make? Any links to where I might buy a good snare (if that's possible)?

Any tips on set up?

I plan on shooting, then field dressing first, or possibly just bleeding/carrying back home to hang/gut/skin/quarter.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I've never heard of snaring pigs? I can't imagine it! I've seen hog traps for removing hogs from the ranch, boy are they built tough!

Use a trap first to weed them down (assuming it's legal). You don't want them getting snare shy by catching one out of a group and the rest figuring out that game...once they do the only option is to stay up all night and shoot them or catch them with dogs. I started with 5 out of a group of 30 that got educated and that group has grown to over 40 that are all snare/trap shy.

You could always offer free hog hunting on this forum... I'm guessing several members will be willing to come down to help trim your numbers.

I have never trapped/snared hogs, but for essentially every other animal snares have less risk for making animals shy to the method than traps (either foothold, bodygrip or liver/box). This is my experience with coyotes, fox, raccoon, and beaver. Snares are so small it's hard to make animals shy to them. They can be placed in so many situations where they can be hidden and that the hog cannot avoid like fence crossings, narrow trails through grass, brush, etc. They are cheap and effective. It is not practical to have 10 pen or box traps but it is nothing to buy 50-100 snares and have the entire area strategically covered. In my mind it is the fastest way to clean up a particular critter if the conditions are conducive. Again though, I have no hog experience.

There are hog snares that can be purchased from reputable places like the snare shop, or you can contact snare makers directly and tell them what state you live in (to ensure you comply with all local regulations which is paramount), how big your hogs are, what type of terrain you have, anticipated anchor method etc and they can custom build you some snare (usually <$3 each). I am partial to Rally Hess out of Hill City MN, he makes some amazing snares and is very knowledgeable, and it wouldn't surprise me if he knew plenty about hog snaring despite being in MN.

Also, go on over to trapperman.com. Very active trapping forum (far and away the most active on the internet) with tons of guys that have mountains of first hand knowledge about how to control hogs, particularly with traps and snares. They will set you straight.
