That rattler was west of Gillette 50 miles. Stopped on the road and it was just behind my truck and I nearly stepped on it.

Unreal! I was at a local hospital earlier this week visiting a family member. I wanted to show my brother a rifle on gun broker and the hospitals wifi wouldn't allow me to view the page due to content. Wow! I guess looking at gun broker is very dangerous!

LOL! Are you hunting private land? There are rattlers in that country. Just watch where you step and you will be fine. Was surprised to see that little guy still out after all the snow around 10/1. Maybe he didnt know any better. lol
I am hunting a ranch that will allow me to take one buck. If that works out and I'm able to get a doe tag I'm hoping to check out some public land during doe hunt. Public land is tough from what I hear but will try. Snakes scare the heck out of me!! Will be walking very slow lol.

The reason I was asking about if it was private land is the owner wound be the best source of info on the snakes in the area at that time of year.

Yep..our timber rattlers smell about like a cottonmouth. It's a slightly different smell than when you walk up on a hog bed and their rank smell is still lingering. It's distinct enough to make you stop and look around.

Well we don't have any cotton mouths up here, or that I know about lol. The most we run into have been pronghorn hunting, otherwise we have been lucky in not really running into them.
