Welcome Matt, thanks for the introduction. Elk hunting kicked me pretty good too this past year. It was a good motivator to keep in shape for me. Best wishes to in the coming year and welcome to the forum.

Matt,

I guided in that area years ago- mainly around Guffey (sp?). Our best hunting was the first rifle season. We had many private leases but many of our elk were shot on the small pieces of public between these ranches. Take a good look at your maps and find a few of these spots to focus on.

Welcome Matt - the west is a gorgeous place to be!

Hey, the not so secret secret is that elk hunting kicks all our butts...then you shoot one!! From there on out "getting your butt kicked" takes on a whole new meaning. The elk ALWAYS gets the last laugh.

Matt,

That is the main area I guided. I only took two archery hunters but both were successful hunts. One rag horn and one 6x7 that maybe scored 250. Most rifle hunters shot smaller rag horns. Again, most of our elk were public land elk even though we had private ranches. Spend some time scouting and you should have a great hunt. The best bull taken by all hunters ( 20-25 total) in all hunts was a 7x7 that scored about 285. I am only aware of one 300"+ bull taken in that area the two years I guided. It was on a ranch 20 miles west of Guffey. I think the genetics are there but they rarely get the age needed to be big. On an archery hunt, I would take the first bull with a brow tine that presented a shot. Feel free to send me a PM if you are interested in more info. Good luck!
