New career path?

As I get older, though I am still young, I'm quickly realizing my chosen career path will not be where I retire. I've been a cop since 2007 and have had more than my share of fights and car wrecks leaving my body broken.

I've spent most of the last 2 year's recovering from various injuries and have concluded its time to start chasing new horizons.

This year I started a small guiding outfit here in Ohio. Hopefully in 3-5 years it will be a partial source of income. I've been making a little money writing for various magazines and websites and a project I've been working on.

I'm just putting this out there to see if anyone has any suggestions. I'm fairly tied to this area with family and my wife's job. I don't mean to come across discontent...just looking for something new before I break in half!!!!

Game warden? Law Enforcement background and hunting passion might help open some doors. My dad, uncle, and grandpa were all cops, so I kindof know a little about the toll on the body and mind. Thanks for your work! My dad started doing some cabinetry and furniture after he retired. It seemed like there was a niche in our area for custom work. Not sure about your skills of hobbies, but sometimes taking a hobby to the next level is a good fit. Something you enjoy and what not. Well good luck.

I've certainly entertained the game warden path.

As far as skills and hobbies, the one I most enjoy is writing. I am putting substantial effort into chasing that path!

Game warden just means your working when you want to hunt as your work is during hunting season for the most part.

Radiology or some other medical technician. Usually good hours, stable job market, decent pay, no wear and tear on your body, weekends off in most cases, air conditioning/heat. No one wants to hurt you, and you will make it home each night.

Could go back to school and peruse a specialty field such as engineering. Or use your law enforcement skills to join the forest service or blm like others have stated. Or search for other jobs with the state/county you live in since I'm sure your employed through them anyways and I'm assuming there's the possibility you'll know of the job opening before the general public.

If you can, follow your interests.

Misc. thoughts:

Writing is a lot of fun but it's hard to make much money at it.

I always liked outside sales for the freedom, income potential and flexibility.

Working for yourself, if you can pull it off, gives some flexibility to go hunting when you want. Firefighters, most of whom work a second part-time job, get a lot of time off.

Learning a trade can lead to a good income and working for yourself. Plumbers and machinists and probably some other trades in high demand make over 100K after they get established.

Medical fields like physical therapist, X-ray tech have a lot of demand, daytime hours and decent pay. They take 2-4 years of school, though.

Certain areas of tech are in high demand if you don't mind sitting at a desk.

Well, since no one else mentioned it you might check the agriculture industry around your area. We are a bit in a down market right now, but people will always need food. I'm on the research side on the private sector, but there are tons of jobs out there. Heck, you might be able to talk to farmer joe and he might be needing help running equipment or something. Long hours during planting and harvest is the downfall which does interfere with hunting from time to time. Shoot me a PM if you are interested and I can fill you in on the private sector a little.
