Lucky man. There is nothing quite like putting your hands on a set of sheep horns. I hope you take the best ram out there.

Well so your the guy who took my tag! Just kidding. Congrats on a great tag. Any idea where you are planning on hunting?

There is a nice old one eyed ram near the state park that has some good character on his horns. He has to be 10+ years old. Let me know if you are planning on hunting that herd as they hang on private much of the time.

I went on the release a couple of years ago in Sowbelly canyon and those were all young so I would not waste your time there. I dont know much about the herd at Ft Robinson but they are usually pretty easy to find from what I am told.

10+ year old, one eyed ram...sounds pretty dang good. If I drew the tag, I would be looking you up!

Thanks a bunch for all the comments and congrats and encouragement. The game and parks biologist who works with the sheep will be our guide... or else someone just about like him any way. I was doing some research on past hunts and there were several rams that were taken that were said to be 12 1/2 years old. I am told the game and parks want the hunter to have the opportunity to harvest a world class or darn near world class ram. This is what they manage them for. Dec. hunt will be here before I know it. Was going to use my .30-06 but someone who called me said I should use the 7 MM Remington I have ... my elk gun. Comments?

That's awesome! Congrats!!

I was blessed to draw a similar permit here in Texas a couple years ago for desert bighorn. Got to take my son on the hunt with me, and it was a lifelong memory for sure.

I took mine with a 7mm Weatherby Mag. 200 yard shot. I was prepared to shoot 400 yards. They obviously wanted to get as close as possible, but they told me that the shot might be 300+. I don't know where you're hunting, but I'd assume it would be similar conditions in rough country. I'd recommend the flatter shooting 7mag over the .30-06, personally. But whatever you feel most comfortable and confident with at those distances would be good.

7MM will give you a little longer point blank range but IMO it shouldn't matter. Shoot the one you are most comfortable with. I would take both on the hunt though so you are covered in the event you have an issue. Of course drawing a tag like this is a great excuse to go buy a new gun;)

Congratulations, I have some pictures of some of the rams you will likely hunt. Lon Lemmon lives east of Ft Robinson and has guided a hunt resulting in a major trophy. He was with me when some of the pictures were made. Nebraska probably assigns guides from a list, either way you had a lucky draw. Good luck

Awesome! I turkey hunted the park last Spring, are there sheep in there or they elsewhere? Never seen one or any sign, did see elk though. I think of sheep country up high, not NE.

Just talked to the sheep biologist who will be guiding me during the hunt. Said the ram that they would like to give me a chance on should easily be in the 180's... depending on how much he "broomed off". I have no idea if "180's" is big or average or ?? Also "broomed off" must mean wore down or rubbed the tips a little..... right? Seems there was no auction tag this year and I will be the only one chasing sheep in Nebraska com Dec. up in the NW part of the state. COME ON DECEMBER!!!

Do a little research before you hit the field. Sounds like you don't have much experience with sheep. Look at a lot of sheep, at least pictures on line so you can make a good choice at the right time. Everything happens in a hurry and you want top make sure you make a good shot on a decent ram. Congratulations and good luck.

180" is the minimum score to make the all time Boone and Crockett registry. The current world record is between 205" and 210" I believe. 180" ram is well above average...
