I have the chance next year to pick any unit in the state. I will have my choice of units and would like to know what unit is the best for trophy moose? If you could pick one unit to hunt what one and why?

I would hunt 1-4. Saw some nice bulls there 3 or 4 years ago when I was hunting deer. Im not sure how the wolves have effected it since then? Didnt see any wolves when I was there but not sure if it has changed since?

Wow congrats on that tag! I've been hunting Unit 12 this year. It's steep and thick, although bulls taken there are usually better than average. I would pass on it due to difficulty in hunting and not seeing a lot of bulls.

How do you already know that you can hunt any unit in the state for next year? What kind of tag is that?

Just curious.

Definitely hunt the SE corner of Idaho. Unit 70 is probably the best in the state. The unit almost every year runs a 40" average and usually closer to 45". Success is almost always 100%. A couple others to look at are 65 and 70.

These units are no secret. Eastman's also rates them as "excellent" and they are the top picks by Hunting Fool as well.

image.jpgimage.jpgThought I would let you guys know I got my moose tag unit 69-2. I will be hunting for 8 days end of Sep-Oct. Now that I got my tag I will tell you how. Idaho gives the first 5 veterans at the first of the year who are disabled choice of any tag they want. I was the 6th one to come across the desk and put on the waiting list. They have another program for kids if they don't use those tags the give them to the vets on the waiting list. On July 1st I got my tag best part it's free. I am so excited for this hunt and really thankful for states like Idaho who have programs like this. Sorry I could not say anything but wanted to keep competition for a tag to minimum.

Thanks for the info on disabled vets hunts that are available in Idaho. You have to scroll down to the very bottom of the Game & Fish homepage to find the link. I am a disabled vet, and could qualify for the "free hunt", but believe this is for someone who has a more severe disability than me who wouldn't otherwise get a chance to go, and I would feel guilty to take one of the limited tags. Idaho also allows NR vets with 40% or more disabilities to buy tags for about the resident rate. Resident tags for vets with the same rating can get tags for $5. WOW! I wish more states had programs like this. My son is 40% after three tours in the gulf, but could never get the time off work to go on a hunt. I'll see if I can find a way.
Airborne; thank you for your service. Any luck on your hunt?
